Some Brake Help

Attachment 607282O.k. Did my brake a alittle while ago, then BANG the peddle goes to the floor and I have problems.
So, I disassemble the entire system and discover problems.
First problems passenger rear-- self adjust came undone and was mangled up.
Second problem--I seem to have installed the rear pads incoorectly.

Passenger side has the smaller pad facing forward, drivers side has larger pad facing forward.

Can you also tell me if the hareware is installed correctly?
I do not want to do this again. I have never had so much trouble with brakes before. This is my first truck and my first manual brake system.

I`ll need some other opinions but I donot see the centering bar with spring that goes just under the wheel cylinder....! ( on any of the backing plates )

The center bars were not there when I first removed the system.
So, I assumed that they were never provided from the factory. I have 1964 C20 they are the first year for self adjusting brakes.
Do I need to purchase them, even though I have no emerency cable running into the rear brakes.
My e-brakes are the type that stop the driveshaft.

Everything looks normal except where's the star wheel adjuster and spring on your second pic.
And the pads need to be set with short on the front. FYI the centre bars are called strut bars if someone is looking for them. You don't need them. I don't see any leaks from your cylinders or did you clean it for pics.

No, I replaced all componets in the entire brake system. New wheel cylinders, hardware, lines, master cylinders.
The star wheel fell out and was damaged, I don't know the cause!
This is one of the reasons I removed all drums, to inspect the system.

Then only one of two things happened then, either the star adjuster was not quite locked into the slot with the brake shoe and or lower spring broke or dislodged from the shoe.

I beleive that also.
I am going to compare the spring with the others so I can see if they are the same.
I have a feeling that it may be different and that is the reason for the parts coming apart.
I have had a nightmare with NAPA giving me the wrong parts. So, I have had to redo things several times.
The rear masters were wrong, I am on my second master as the first was bad.

If its not in the PC, they are lost, they don`t know how to read a parts manual any more.

Look on Napa.com. Find the part and it's number and take that with you to the Napa store.
I'm lucky here. The Napa guys are both old as dirt and don't even look in the book. They just go in the back and get it. Never been wrong for my stuff.
The star adjuster assembly might come in a hardware kit that includes all the springs etc.

From the photo's the self adjust is facing the front of the vehicle.
If this is correct then mine set-up is wrong, my self adjust- star wheel is facing the rear of the vechicle.

The auto adjuster goes on the rear shoe.

Also make sure the adjusters are on the correct side of the truck. They are different from left to right side. If you had an adjuster on the wrong side, it would have screwed itself in, and then maybe it came loose from the shoes? Just a thought......

Is there a 'L' or 'R' label on the star adjuster to determine which goes on which side?

I think some of them are marked 'L' or 'R', but they may not be either. I usually just look at them and determine which side they belong on. One side will have left hand threads and the other will have right hand threads. You just have to think about how they function, and place them so that they adjust outward when actuated by the adjuster.
