Fuel Filter Issues

I am finishing a 5.3 Litre swap into my 71 stepside and having some trouble with fuel filters clogging. I have a new tank, pump, all new lines, and running the filter/regulator set up from a corvette. when i first fired the engine i had good fuel pressure and the motor ran fine, as time went on (couple of days with various starts while working out bugs) i lost all fuel pressure and could barely get the truck to idle. I replaced the fuel filter and every thing was great, then drove the truck for about 15min. and same thing lost fuel pressure and could barely get it to idle and run.

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

Is there a lot of trash in the tank you are using?

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

I didn't think so, from what I could see it looked clean, and it is brand new. But now who knows, I have to be picking up some junk from somewhere or something is going on with the fuel filter. I orderd a different brand of fuel filter to see if that changes anything.

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

Have you tried blowing through the filter, I highly doubt a filter would clog that fast.

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

I would try buying your gas somewhere else, they might have junk in their tanks. When you put this system together did you use any excessive amounts of thread sealant?

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

I replaced the fuel filter again, and filled the tank and it seems to be doing fine. I took the truck out for a good drive last night and everything is good!!!!!

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

Have been driving the rtruck for 3weeks now and it is awesome. Took it out last night, and on the way home the same old problem again, no power when revved, but it will idle. Very low to no fuel pressure on the gauge WTF!!! I guess I will throw another fuel filter in it today, this is getting old.

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

Remove the fuel filter and cut it open to see if anything is inside stopping it up. What kind of fuel lines did you use, some rubber hoses will not withstand the high flow of fuel and will come apart from the inside and could stop up the filter. Just a suggestion since your post doesn't state what fuel lines you used. Either way, I would cut the filter open to see if it is actually stopped up and what is inside.

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

did you convert to a car intake or different rail? I see your running the 'vette regulator on a truck setup.

you could try running a screen style pre-filter if it really is stuff geting into your pump and filter, but it shouldn't be a necessity.

I agree cut it open and make sure it is really clogged. I have heard of cheaper filters having bad regulators out of the box. I would get a wix or ac delco if you don't have one of them already.

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

Are you sure you don't have a vapor lock issue or a vacuum problem that gets relieved when you disconnect the fuel filter?

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

I agree with the folks that mentioned trash in the line. I used the braided hose on my truck so you have to cut it with a cut-off wheel. When i blew the line out it was full of the rubber "dust"

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

Filtering before the vette reg/filter?
Is the gas tank vented? or using a vented cap?
Any codes?

Re: Fuel Filter Issues

Drove the truck all weekend in 105 degree weather with the AC cranked and no overheating or fuel issues, this thing is awesome!!! beside this minor filter issue. I dont know the brand of filter I picked up during the build, I am assuming they were cheaper made because the cost was cheap, i have been thru all 3 of them now. I made sure to put in a AC Delco in this time. The entire fuel system is brand new with steel braided rubber hose Walbro pump, corvette filter/reg and a Boyds Welding Fuel tank. I am running the stock truck intake.
