Need Help - Grinding Noise After Rear Diff Fluid Change

Okay Gents,

I am in the process of installing my flip kit and C-Notch and my bed is off. I figured this was the time to freshin things up, so I changed the oil in the diff.
I took the cover off and replaced the gasket on my 10 bolt rear end, and now I hear an occasionaly grinding. I put synthetic lucus gear oil in it. Has anybody ran into this issue. I was backing out of my drive way when I heard it. It sounds like a osilating grind every 10 revolutions or so. I may take it appart to inspect. but, I wanted to see if anybody has experienced this issue. I appreciate any advice you guys can give me. I don't want to damage anything. Thank you.

If its limited slip you are supposed to add the additive..Some units don't like synthetic oil.
I think auburn for example says not to use it.

with a posi, my understanding is that it is better to use conventional gear oil with posi-additive.

Re: Need Help - Grinding Noise After Rear Diff Fluid Change

It kind of sounds like it's scraping the cover, but there is only one way to install the cover. I changed the fluid out on my 81 and never ran into this problem. Do you guys think I should pull the cover off and add a none synthetic gear oil? It will set me back another 30 bucks, but if that's the problem, then I don't feel too bad spending the coin. The truck is bone stock with the original differential. I have 103k miles. All was fine until I changed the fluid. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks for your help.

I would add the additive first and see if that eliminates the slip.

What kind of additive do you recommend? Also, the diff is filled level with the plug, should I try to pull some oil out?

Re: Need Help - Grinding Noise After Rear Diff Fluid Change

Go to the auto parts store and ask for a bottle of posi lube additive. Its a small bottle . Maybe 4 ounces . I would just park it on a slight incline so that the passenger side is higher and add the lube to the oil you have in it . I just had to do the same on my 65 chevelle. It had a clutch type posi and the previous owner did not add the lube . It growled when I turned sharply at low speeds . It was quiet after the lube .

Re: Need Help - Grinding Noise After Rear Diff Fluid Change

Found my problem guys. I jacked up the rear of my truck and placed it on 4 jack stands to install my c notch. I was able to spin the wheels and better listen for the grinding. It turns out that the noise was comming from my wheel. I though mabe a part of the brake pad came off and was rubbing. I pulled the wheel and drum off and it turns out that I had a piece of the broken riviet stuck between the drum and backing plate causing the grinding. The piece of rivet came from my bump stops that I removed from the frame for the notch.

Anyways- Thank you guys for your help. I just thought I would share that with you.
