have an idling issue with my 283

my 283 is idling way too high (sorry, no tach), and this is a new problem, nothing has changed. I tried backing off the idle adjustment screw, and the spring is plenty tight, no change. I disconnected the throttle linkage, thinking maybe something was binding, but still no change. When I got home tonight, from a relatively short drive (10 minutes ish), there was some smoke from under the hood (not a lot, and not thick), which quickly dissipated after I shut it off (at which point there was some brief run on). The temp gauge was where it always is. Carb is a 650 holley single pump, not sure how old it is, but it is quite new looking.

Could this be a timing issue? have not checked the timing yet. Maybe overly advanced timing might leave excess heat in the heads...

Re: have an idling issue with my 283

Have you checked the fast idle cam from the choke? It could be sticking in the fast idle position. It could bev the secondary throttle plates not closeing. I dought if it is a timing issue. It could increase the idle speed some but not make it race like that.

I would think either the distributor loosened enough to allow it to advance, or perhaps if you have an electric choke, something went goofy there. Did it smell like an electrical problem? It seems like a remote chance, but you might also check the advance weights in the distributor to see if they are stuck in the advanced position.

Thanks guys, I will check the timing (quick and easy), then move on to the choke (it is an electric choke), and if still an issue check the advance weights.
Appreciate the help

I think I would check for vacuum leak....either at carb base or dizzy vacuum advance, intake manifold.

Vacuum leak woould be my first guess. Timing doesn't just change itself. A little bit of carb cleaner sprayed around base of carb while idling will tell you. The engine will increase in rpm. If you have power brakes, try pinching off the hose to the booster. Normally a leaking booster will make a harder than normal pedal to push, but not always if the leak is small.

Re: have an idling issue with my 283

timing was good, sprayed carb cleaner (no change in idle speed), put a test lamp on the choke power lead... no juice. followed the wire back under the dash, found an in line fuse connector. At first I thought it had just come apart, but it would not go back together, it had broken. Found a replacement, and crimped it in line, back to normal.

Appreciate the input guys, thanks
