Western Hauler I just picked up.

First of all, wasn't really looking to buy a truck like this but price was right and its all original. 1987 gmc Westerm hauler. No rust, no dents, fenders not busted. 454 tbi, 400th. No sure how I am going to build it. The paint and interior are staying. Its going to be my new pull rig. What do you think guys?

The paint looks pretty awesome. Definitely keeping tabs on this one. Buff it up, polish the wheels, and vacuum the cab and I'd call it a day.

Very cool, are you going to freshen up the paint at all or just leave it like it is? I like these off the wall paint jobs.

Re: Western Hauler I just picked up.

Nice find.

The EFI engine probably has many more miles left in it if the oil was changed on regular basis. THM400 is nearly bullet proof as long as trany fluid is kept clean and cool (below 180F). Drop the pan check the sludge for metal flakes and derbies. Before driving go through the fuel system. Drop tanks, replace fuel pumps with AC Delco EP-241 or EP-381. Also do not forget to replace FP to feed through hose with fuel submersible rated hose - SAE 30R10. Naturally Fuel Filter.

The OE BBC camshaft was optimized for low end torque and basically chokes engine off above 4000 RPM. There are modern camshafts that TBI system compatible that can give you a bit more torque and HP while maintaining excellent street manners. A new camshaft will need a bump in fuel pressure from 9 - 13 PSI to 15 - 18 PSI. This small increase will easily support higher engine output without upsetting ECM. This easily done with a stiffer FPR spring.

Re: Western Hauler I just picked up.

Not local at all. It was an adventure to get it. The truck I was pulling it with, A Ford!!!---Not mine--sprung a leak in the radiator. Took me stopping every 8-10 miles and putting water in it from Waco to my casa. Had a flat on the trailer, hitch bent, broke three fins of the fan, tore up both my trailer fenders, and just genrally upset.

Funny thing is, I had a hard time sleeping when I got home. I so happy to find a truck like that. Completly unmolested.
