Re: propane

i am also interested but damn why are those kits so exspensive! i have been looking and they all cost a thousand and all your buying are injectors and wires. i seen a jeep forum where a lot of guys were talking about it, i am curious if you need the kit or if you can find the parts some where else?

around my area theres alot of old tractors that ran on propane but also in my area theres alot of old tractor shows so i cant win for loosing

for me this is just for putputting around town or hiway where my rpms are low and not alot of power is needed but when im able to truck pull with my truck its easy to pull the tank and mixer to pass inspection

Re: propane

I run mine on straight propane, it has Impco 425 Gas Carb mounted on to a Holley square bore base plate with a Impco E Converter and a 80 lt Tank Mounted in the Tub, I get about 250 Miles out of a tank.
I will post some more photos later

Re: propane

Something to think about...mpg

My brother drives both a diesel bus and another propane bus on other days. He says that the mpg on propane is ridiculous low. It's less that half of a diesel or gas powered vehicle.

maybe a dual fuel setup

Company I work for tried it in the 80's , Had our own tank and pump . Think the books showed a 7 to 10% power difference .

361's and 391's in f750s and all brands of pickups . 1st propane "carbs" where a pain . 2cd gen worked pretty good . That was before the tax man jumped in .

With the road use tax it wasn't near as sweet a deal . As the old trucks were cycled out and the new ones cycled in the propane set ups were left off .

These were a dual fuel and all the trucks were carburated at that time . If you switched back and forth it was fine but when a truck was run on propane for a month or so the carb gaskets dried out . When you switched back to gasoline most leaked fuel . I rebuilt carbs left and right for a while .

Re: propane

I have a K30 on 'pane. Its a 454 BBC with a 425 Impco mixer on top, mono fuel. Runs like a raped ape, though it runs out of breath above 5000 RPM.

Re: propane

its starting to look like the only place you save money is on oil changes and thats if you ran straight propane, a dual fuel your oil would still get dirty

for the dual fuel what kind of mpg do you get on each fuel include engine size and trans type

i just wana rot my brain with numbers befor i pay out that kind of money

Re: propane

Don't bother with duel fuel, propane and gas require different amounts of advance to fire properly and it's going to run like a bag of s@$t if you set it up in the middle.

You should also take into consideration that a propane motor needs hardened exaust seats or your going to run into problems not far down the road.

If your still into it go to the wrecker and find yourself a propane setup. A couple buddies of mine have been out the door for under $100

Re: propane

he guys,

I was pointed to this topic by another forum member.

I have a K20 suburban and also drive it 100% propane. I had bi-fuel setup, but didnt like it.

I also then changed to a IMPCO425 mixer on a Quadrajet baseplate. On the quadrajet baseplate you need an adapter from Quadrajet to IMPCO425.

parts can be bought from
raso enterprises
http://www.rasoenterprises.com/index.php

they have a shop, very fine website and rich FAQ/database

go check it out.

With my TH400 I got about 9 mpg here in the Netherlands, but there are a lot of starts and stops and idleing at traffic lights over here...killer for mileage

I have swapped to a TH700R4 ad now get 12.2 mpg on highway stretches...wich is fine for me.

I have a 100 liter tank under the back and 70 liter in the car. Because of the 80% filling prevention valve I can get a total of 136 liters of propane...

here are some pictures.

some stuff you need to take care of when going for propane:
- adjust your timing:
- 5 more intital
- 5 less total
- or rule of thumb: 14 initial, 14 mechanical, 14 vacuum advance (ported)
- make sure you got a good spark. I added a MSD-6-AL
- change thermostat to lower temperature...I went from 195 to 180F

shoot me a PM or post here for questions...

Re: propane

had some ideas about getting the fast ez efi maybe run dual fuel with because efi will get better mpg's then the carb and propane to me would be for city trafic where i can burn the cheap fuel at the red lights just to keep the engine running

if i wired the key on switch power to a toggle switch and have the efi on one side and propane on the other it would make the dual fuel nice to have because you dont have to wate for the bowls to empty its just a flip of a switch injectors shut off and propane flows

now with 11.5:1 compression is timeing really going to be a consern
