Value of 1980 Stepside Short box W/250 4x4?????
Hey guys.Ill be honest,I dont know much about the trucks from the 80's.
I was hoping someone out there could help me out? My uncle recently lost his job and asked me to help him sell his 1980 Chevy short Box,Stepside. The truck is a 4x4 and has a 250 inline 6 and a 4 speed tranny. He's put about $4000 worth of new stuff on the truck over the past year and he thinks its worth about $6000.I tend to think thats a bit high, but I honestly dont know.Below is a link to the craigslist add.So if anyone can check out the post and see what you guys think as far as price,Id appreciate it.....BTW:Truck in located about 60 miles south of Seattle if anyones interested in purchasing Last edited by N2TRUX; 07-29-2012 at 09:04 PM. |

From the condition i see it in and based on the prices of the trucks that sell on craigslist around here i would say 4500 is about what you would get

Re: Value of 1980 Stepside Short box W/250 4x4?????
Looks rather clean to me.
4X4 rims, dual tanks. It's hard to see if there is any rust. But from the images you posted, I cant see any. Interior looks clean and complete. Does the engine run good? Does the transmission and transfer case equipment all work? Cant say there is much demand on 250 6-cylinder powered trucks. Its up to you. If its what you want get it. Its always best to find a truck that is complete, running, and missing nothing. Makes fixing her up much easier. Do you have to do emmissions testing where you live? Can a 292 be mated in place of the 250 ? A 292 would be a great torque engine for this !

Re: Value of 1980 Stepside Short box W/250 4x4?????
I think the rust might be a negative. Many/most (including me) think that fender rust means rust deeper in the chassis, even if it is not true. A nice, unmolested, running truck with no major damage and not leaking or burning oil starts at about $2500 around here - and they usually sell quickly - but that is for a rust free truck. From there, you can add about $400 for a good interior, and another $500 for a good appearing paint job. I would add another $300 for good tires. That gets you up to $3700. Stepsides are in demand, so I would add another $500 for that and you are at $4200. The right front fender will have to be replaced and repainted ($300 for aftermarket or used fender), but if somebody wants a stepside that should not be a factor. No a/c is a negative, but also not a big factor in your part of the country - the truck would be a hard sell in AZ.
If somebody has to have a stepside with little need of restoration then I think you can get $4200. The six cylinder is not a negative because it should be slightly better gas mileage. I personally miss the old inline 6 Carryall I had - lots of room to work on them - you can almost step inside the engine compartment to work on it.:lol I know $4200 is not what your uncle wants to hear, but every forum member posting here will likely lose big $$ if they had to sell their truck - vehicles in general are depreciating assets - just a fact of life. Good luck on the sale. |

Re: Value of 1980 Stepside Short box W/250 4x4?????
Thanks for all the replies.
Yeah.I was thinking the $6000++ was a bit high.He seems to think because he dumped the money into it,that its worth it.He originally paid $2500 and put $4k in it. From the sounds of it,$4k OBO would be a better starting point. Also sounds like the 250 6 isnt the big draw that he was hoping it would be. So based on what you all said,Ill see if I can get him to revise the price a bit. Thanks again! |

Leave the price and see how many hits you get and take any serious offer over $4500 or so. If it were closer I might be interested, but that's a long ride.
Good luck. |
