Talking Power windows on older trucks???

I was wondering if I could take doors with power windows from the 80's and bolt them up to my '75 K10?

Make sure you get as much of the Harness as you can.

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

Do yourself a favor and make SURE not to cut any of the wiring! When you pull the doors they need to be unplugged right inside the cab behind the kick panels. You will also want to make sure to pull the whole harness the runs the length of the dash. Get the relay too. It is silver and mounts right above the gas pedal

That is how I did it on my 74. Got doors and all the wiring off a friends theft recovery 85 Suburban. You will need to wire in a 10 ga wire with a circuit breaker from the battery, because the early truck fuse block will not support power requirement of power windows and door lock (you might as well do locks at the same time.

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

Maybe a silly question but will the motors and such bolt up to my '75 doors or do they need to be newer?

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

You will need newer doors. Find some doors close to the year of the window stuff your pulling out.......or just buy the entire door with the stuff in it already and bolt it to your truck. Our trucks did not get power windows till 1977.

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

Moto is right. I've been looking for power window/lock doors for 77-80 trucks as I've wanted to retrofit my 79 with them, but I'm not swapping doors. Very difficult to find the older trucks with windows and locks. Not sure how far up into the 80's I could go before transferring the parts becomes an issue.

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

According to my internetting! It looks like a power window motor falls into 2 groups

Early 1977-1981
Later 1982-1987

So look for doors and window motors from these groups.

Yep, if it's all there? My door panel trim is slightly different but I see no reason why I couldn't adapt the switches.

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

I would like someone that actually knows for sure on the years. It is my understanding that any year motor will bolt up and work in the doors as long as you have the wiring harness to match it as the plugs were designed different on different years.

Motornut mentioned things changed after 81. Another person above mentioned that the older trucks (77-81) didn't have a place in the fuse box to run power to the windows and locks.

So that tells me something important. The 77-81 are probably wired completely different, even if weather pack connectors changed, they also have to be getting power from a different source other than the fuse box.

For me to be happy (mainly because I'm picky) this tells me I better look at 77-81 models that fit my 79 so I can wire it up exactly as GM intended from the correct power source etc...so that when I'm done it looks OEM.

I'm sure the actual window motor itself is probably the same and interchangable as you mentioned. I'm not too concerned about that since buying 30+ year old doors with power windows probably aren't going to work or work very well anyway and will need the motors replaced.

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

Interesting. Mine is a 79, you are right, it has the blade style fuse box.

I'd love to see another 79-81 with power windows if for nothing else just to see what's different at the fuse box (if anything) and see where exactly GM grabbed the power from.

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

I think there is some cotradictary information on the wiring harness for these. It was said that the 77(earlier style fuse boxes) didn't have a place for the power windows to plug in. I pulled a harness out of an original 77 power window truck on Friday and it did have a place to plug them in. In my opinion I would get the later harness even for an early truck. Parts(motors) are much easier to find for the later model trucks as there were so many more that came with them.

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

Got a picture?

I'll take a picture of my 79 without power windows and see if there is a difference in the fuse box...

Although mine takes blade style fuses, if what you say is true, it should still have a place on mine similar to yours for power windows.

Re: Power windows on older trucks???

I will try and get back out to the wrecking yard I got it from and take a picture of the fusebox. A picture isn't really necessary though as all fuseboxes I have seen for the glass fuses are pretty much the same. It actually plugs into the accessory outlet at the top of the fusebox where the tachometers get power from. There is the pink and black wires with the blue connector on it and the PW plug into this. Like I said, I still wouldn't buy and early harness. Plastic on connectors is brittle and it is harder to find the early motors. The early harnesses also have more pieces. They have 2 extra relays that mount to the brake booster housing and one extra relay that mounts to the gas pedal bracket. The later style only has the one relay at the gas pedal and the rest is plug and play. If you run the early harness you have to drill an extra hole through the firewall for the wire to go through for those extra relays.

Exactly why I want the older setup. It has to be a correct install for me for the year truck or I won't do it. I'm picky that way. I prefer it to look correct, and have correct color coded wires, wire looms, brackets, etc...
Which is why I'm looking for a complete PW truck so I can just pull the doors, wire harness, fuse box, etc..

I have a source to get reproduction OEM plastic connectors so that's not a problem. The power window motors are out there to be had as well,,,these trucks aren't that old yet I'm used to dealing with much older vehicles.

Don't worry about the pic bud, I was thinking you had pulled that with the harness and already had it with you. Don't make a special trip.
