63 3 speed manual transmission question

So I took my truck in to fix the exhaust today and low it's leaking black fluid pretty heavy. It looks like oil but when I check the dipstick no move, ent yet...I'm talking a BIG spot like maybe 4 oz of liquid in the mall parking lot after about an hour. Does the manual 3 speed have a dipstick? If so where? If not how do you check the oil in the trans case? Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance!

Re: 63 3 speed manual transmission question

On the passenger side of the trans mission case there should be two 1/2" pipe plugs, one at the bottom of the case ( Drain)and one about the middle level of the case (fill & oil level). Remove the middle one to check your gear oil level. Your transmission gear oil level should be even with the bottom of that pipe plug hole. If you remove the 1/2" plug from the upper hole & gear oil runs out the transmission is over filled. The gear oil should be 90 WT so it will be a lot thicker than motor oil. Hope this helps.

Re: 63 3 speed manual transmission question

there is a pipe plug about 1/2 way up or 1/2 way down, however that you look at it on the passenger side of the trans case. undo it and stick your finger in to see if you can feel any gear oil. the level should be the bottom of that hole. if it runs out, then you have too much
so you have had a truck for at least a year and you haven't checked your fluid levels yet. there is also a plug in your rear-end (the trucks) to also check the fluid level there; same thing.
have you greased your truck yet or changed the eng oil?

Re: 63 3 speed manual transmission question

I flushed the brake and radiator fluid, changed the oil did a tuneup, replaced the fuel pump, lines, master cyl coil cap, fuel filter fuel pickup and various other small things, but no, embarrassingly enough, I never checked the rear diff nor the trans box...idk how it skipped my mind . My feeling is that the seal around the shafts that push the gears are. Wearing, or they may have repaired the exhaust while on the truck and the heat from welding may have damaged the seals. The shift mechanism is adjacent to where they replaced the broken exhaust pipe.

Re: 63 3 speed manual transmission question

Anyone know what to look for as far as commonly replaced seals on this trans? Hopefully I won't have to pull the tranny (

Doesn't smell like burned ATF at all. Just regular oil

usually it is the rear seal. now if you had given it a grease job, you would have been aware if there is a leak there as the u joints must be greased once in awhile. you should see where it has leaked there and in the circumference of that area you should see a dark wet ring of oil over everything inc the bottom of the floorboards. leaks onto the front yoke and ujoint area and then when you are in motion it spreads it around into a circle.
a couple of things here 1. change the seal. 2 the yoke is more than likely worn where the seal rides on it; 2 things that you can do here either replace the yoke or install what is called a speedi-sleeve(you can google this) for a less expensive repair. check your ujoints for wear. odds are that they will have to be replaced ( regular greasing helps to avoid this)

It won't smell like ATF Oil. Gear oil has a strong smell of it's own, which is normal. It's hard to desrcibe it. You have to experience it to know. If what you have smells like regular oil, it sounds like engine oil.

Re: 63 3 speed manual transmission question

So then why can't I see any movement on the dipstick? Also, it never leaked until the exhaust work was done

Re: 63 3 speed manual transmission question

I took some rough pics of the trans plu where the oil is collecting. It IS the lowest spot in the power train so the fact that it is collecting here doesn't necessarily mean transmission, I only guessed at that because the engine oil dipstick seems to be steady

Re: 63 3 speed manual transmission question

It really takes a decent amount for it to move on the dipstick. A puddle on the ground can also sometimes look worse than it is.

I would be checking the Oil Filter.

if engine oil leaks out the back or wherever it usually doesn't go past the dust cover under the clutch; drips from the bottom of it

Re: 63 3 speed manual transmission question

Going to perform an oil change and check the filter, add some Lucas and see what happens, honestly this had made me more aware that I need to check the trans and diff oil levels as well as grease the yoke and ujoints
