Ever hear of a pressure switch for brake lights?

When my brothers swapped out the steering column and removed the clutch pedal from my 64 stepper they removed the switch that activated the brake lights.

I was talking to a guy today that said I should just install a pressure activated switch into the brake line and problem solved but he didn't explain how or where to get such a switch.

So, as usual, I am asking you really smart truck guys what he is talking about?

I am pretty sure you could find the stuff you need at Speedway or another hot rod store.

I dont have one on any cars or trucks but I do have one on my Harley. It goes righteousness into a t in the rear brake line. Works great. You could probably get one through JP cycles if you coulnt find one at an auto parts store.

All Fords had them back in the 1950's and I believe in the 1960's as well. You could always tell a Ford on the highway at night because many of their brake lights would flicker when the brakes were partially applied.

Re: Ever hear of a pressure switch for brake lights?

A lot of street rods use inline pressure switch, I have one myself, the only problem that arises with them is you need to flush brake system every three years or they tend to stick, brake fluid absorbs moisture at a rate of 2 percent a year which causes the rust you see in a most of brake systems which will cause them to stick either open or closed. just for info...

Re: Ever hear of a pressure switch for brake lights?

The switch on a Harley routinely lasts for life with no sticking problems, but the brake system is alot smaller, has aluminum masters and calipers, and only short runs of brakeline half of which are rubber. I would still feel comfortable installing one of those switches in a truck as long as the braking system was in good condition to start with. I would not just stick one in an existing 45-50 year old system and expect it to stay reliable though.

I usually run one in my drag cars that also see some street driving. I run a T-fitting in one of the lines and you can find pressure switches at most wiring/electronics providers, or through Jegs, Summit, etc.

Re: Ever hear of a pressure switch for brake lights?

All aircooled VW's had them. I've had the original german one last 40 years on mine. The new ones though, are pure crap- takes too much pressure to turn them on (lights come on late), and they don't last long at all. I don't know it that's a problem with just the VW parts though. I'm looking into low pressure switches so that the lights come on earlier. I do like the contact switches on the pedal better, since the lights come on as soon as you touch the pedal instead of waiting til enough pressure is built in the system- gives the guy behind you a tad more response time.

The Harley one takes very little pressure to activate.
