Electric choke upgrade

I purchased a carb for my 72 K20 restoration but it came with an electric choke, which I wasn't expecting. Before I return it, are these significantly better than the stock thermal one? Here is a pic of both, original and electric. If I keep it I'm going to have to put a switch somewhere in the cab to activate, right? Also, not a fan of the non stock appearance.

Jud,
I am surprised that you are not having your carb. done by a restoration shop and instead bought a replacement. Look into what it would cost and to have it optimized for your engine setup.

Yes, they are substintially better than the hot-air or the even older bio-metallic coil on the manifold chokes. Less hassle, faster warm ups... All you need is a hot-in-run wire to the terminal & that should be about it. Your new carb is a better quality casting, has nice features such as Adjustable Part Throttle (APT) and better availability on jets/rods & spare parts. You'll barely see the choke under the air cleaner. Save your old carb on the shelf for a full-on resto & enjoy the (more) modern q-jet features.

I never had the original Divorced choke on mine, The P/O gave me the just the q-jet and I swapped out the edelbrock after I had the Q rebuilt. I searched for a new original style and couldn't find the whole setup, all you need is to run the hot wire to an ignition on source. it will choke when needed.

thanks all.

Tim, I was going to have mine rebuilt but I was told that the later design would gain 1mpg or more over my original. I was also told all linkages would bolt right up, so i thought that meant choke and throttle. This one was custom built for my engine. Goal of this truck is to perform as good as possible while retaining a stock appearance. I will set the air cleaner on and see how noticeable the choke is.

Interesting to read the choke is automatic, I wonder how it knows when to activate and when not? is there a temperature sensor built in?
