Re: 62 custom mounts
1st of all tell us what year it is, the C30. what motor did it have. what motor are you going to put in there. so you are saying that you have a 68 and up bellhousing that fits the sm365 trans

Re: 62 custom mounts
its a 1962 it had a i6 235 with the sm420 i want to swap in a 89 350.
things i think i know the 89 350 will need a externally balanced fly wheel 11.5 inch or smaller clutch because of the side mount bell housing as far as everything else i don't know i would really like to keep this trans its a pleasure to drive i got the adapter ring to fit it in a later model bell housing because i could not find a 283 bell housing for the 62 Last edited by blood62; 08-04-2012 at 10:05 PM. |

Re: 62 custom mounts
now we know what we are dealing with. there are alternative in this installation. if you can find an orig 60-62 v8 bellhousing it will solve your your clutch linkage situation and bolt onto the crossmember, simplifying that. you can use the 67 and down b/housing and run you hydr linkage on the drivers side and still bolt to the crossmember. I do not know whether or not the 68 and up b/housing will bolt into the c/member but am quie sure that some one will state that. using the appropriate flywheel with that eng is no problem as long as you use the corresponding starter. you can look at Makeb's thread on his front eng mounting which is pretty straight forward . that will take all of the guesswork out of it and you will be going down the road in no time
Capt fab should be able to help you on a couple of items for the install and others who have done the same number will help you with info lot do use an a/trans with this install and it simplifies the clutch linkage problem ron |

Re: 62 custom mounts
As for your motor mounts, you will have to fabricate the frame brackets to accept the 'clamshell' style mounts. Do you plan on keeping the hydraulic clutch, or are you converting to manual linkage?

Re: 62 custom mounts
Yes it does appear that your motor mounts will be partly on the crossmember and partly off the rear edge of it. I would just add some gussets or support of some kind to support the rear.

Re: 62 custom mounts
The original '60-'62 small block with an manual trans motor mount, is a front mount at one point only. The '60-'62 small block with an auto trans were side mounts, but are completely different than the '63-'72 mounts. They obviously have to be configured so as to allow for the center of the motor mount being on the rear edge of the crossmember. A 283 is no different than the 350 you have as they are both small blocks.
If you want more of a bolt in motor mount, you will need to use the '63-'72 truck motor mounts, and the '67-'72 small block motor mount brackets. Those brackets will fit the shorter frame height of the '60-'62 trucks and be in the rearward location. Here is a pic of those brackets on a '62 GMC frame.
