Should I change steering wheels back?
I put this deluxe wheel on my '65 a while back, and while it's nice, I miss the simplicity of the old wheel with the chunky spokes and rock solid feel with no power steering. What do you guys think? And if I do go back, what to do with the deluxe wheel....

Part of my motivation is I've been looking at a holly projection unit for the 283.

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
I think a mint condition original entry level steering wheel is just as attractive as the deluxe version. I may not have thought that way when these were new, but plain wheels in excellent condition are just about as rare as the deluxe version now.

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
I guess I'm in the minority.
The first time I saw a deluxe wheel I thought someone must of got it from some car. It just doesn't look like it goes to me. I don't knock those who prefer the deluxe, I just prefer the standard wheel. To me it looks like it belongs in a truck. That's just me...

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
It does look a little out of place...don't get me wrong, it's nice, but I think I might go back. My original is in such good shape too. I redid the deluxe wheel.

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
That is a great looking wheel in great shape. Much better than the old broken & dirty POS currently in my 63Burb.

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
Im a standard wheel guy myself. The deluxe wheels look to much like the car steering wheels in my opinion.

Keep it, it will grow on you and you will appreciate what you have. I see there are too many people in line ahead of me that are ready to swap with you.

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
Looks like it came out of an old buick.. LOL I may be way off, but that's what comes to mind when I see the deluxe wheel...
If you decide to keep it, I'm in search of an original basic wheel for my 65. I currently have a wheel from a 96 pickup "don't fit at all"!! Let me know if your willing to sell the original. Thanks |

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
the deluxe truck wheel like yours came out first in a 59 el camino. or at least thats the first one i saw... so it was designed for a car, or a car/truck.

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
I could be wrong, it's a long time ago, but for some reason, I think they used that wheel on the 58 cars?
58 was such a funny year for the cars.....totally different from the 55-57's, and also nothing at all like the 59-60-61's I think they used the same body as the Pontiac? Maybe they just didn't quite have the 59 style ready to go? LOL. Last edited by 63burban4x4; 08-07-2012 at 05:34 PM. |

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
"it's not often easy, it's not often kind, but did you ever have to make up your mind" lyric from a great old song.
I think you should keep both wheels. You want the standard wheel on now, keep the deluxe wheel in case you ever change your mind, or need to do any repairs to the standard wheel. I just bought a column with a deluxe wheel on it (needs some minor restoration), to replace my aftermarket wheel, so I am tickled to have it.

Re: Should I change steering wheels back?
well, I sparked my own curiosity and looked around....double checking on my own recolection. It seems like they did use that wheel, although with a full circle horn ring and slightly different center, in the lower level 58 cars, (Biscayne, Brookwood) though not in the Impalas. Couldn't find any pics of interiors of Bel Airs .............
Anyway, not to get far off the subject, I personally like the Deluxe wheel, but then again, if you do as nice a job restoring your standard wheel, it will still look killer.....the inside of your truck is stunning, IMO. -Ed |
