Door speakers
Ok guys I'm tired of not being able to hear my radio at 55mph so I got some speakers and an amplifier to help out. I have speakers behind my seats but the sound just doesn't escape very well. I'm going with door speakers because I don't care about staying stock. If anyone else has done this I would appreciate some pics and any tips/tricks/advice. I'm not worried about mounting the speakers but more about running the wires from the door back into the cab in a way that they won't get damaged. Figured I would ask here because you all build some really neat stuff. Thanks in advance!

Re: Door speakers
I'd look for something like this
http://www.painlessperformance.com/w...rchField=40022 or this http://www.carolinacustom.com/pages/...ators_page.jsp otherwise get a rubber wire loom like on most newer cars. It would probably be better for speakers anyway

Re: Door speakers
I haven't installed them yet, but I bought the power rubber window conduit tubes from classic parts, plan to run the speaker wires in the top portion of the door, or possible near the door stop/check.

Re: Door speakers
I installed the rubber boots or conduits from a square body Ford Bronco in my 64 C-10. Yes, they're a little large but they look GM factory. I also plan on adding Power windows & locks in the future and there's plenty of room inside the conduits to run everything with out worry of rubbing or chaffing. There was a "little" blood loss on my part but it was well worth it to me.

Re: Door speakers
How will you protect the speakers form all the water that will enter the door? I personally would mount kick panel speakers

Re: Door speakers
Hey Jim, what size speakers are those? I thought about getting a replacement plate, but I want to be able to put a decent set of speakers in it too, not just some terrible speakers that happen to mount in the factory position

Re: Door speakers
My doors were cut by the PO, that was almost a deciding factor on the truck purchase, looked as if he cut them with a pair of tin snips and a drill, anyway after I had to straighten them out with a hammer and dolly I put in a decent pair of 6x9`s, couldn`t find any foam weather buckets for them I used 20 mil black plastic sheeting, big enough that you would push the speaker into the hole, secure it with the screws and cut off the excess and snap the cover on. I have since got a pair of inner door panels to repair the doors with when I get the chance.

Re: Door speakers
Your doors are the worst place in the truck to install speakers and it ruins a perfectly good door. You must have a better idea. IMO

Re: Door speakers
Check out the tech sections of the top car audio sites. Most have diagrams on the best places to mount what type of speakers. There not vehicle specific, but as far as car audio, it's all pretty generic.
In general, you want your mid and high pitch sound speakers (2,3, and 4 ways) angled toward your head, and as far from your ears as possible (farther away the better the sound) and low pitch (bass) speakers can go about anywhere. That being said, sub woofers can go behind, or even under the seat, and you'll hear them just fine. The door is the worst place to put speakers. For reasons stated above, and they will be pointed at your feet/ legs. You still won't hear them. Plus, think of the abuse they take every time someone slams the door closed. Kick panels are one of the best places, so long as they're pointed at your head. The DVC speakers in stock place of the dash are good. If you can angle them toward you, they'd be better. Additional tweeter type speakers mounted to the bottom of dash and angled toward you are a great addition. The headliners with speakers are a good idea, but they mount the speakers too close to you. Another option, on either side of your in cab fuel tank, is a massive empty space. You'd have to build a box to fit, but it is about the perfect size for 2 stacked (4 total) 6x9s. Build it so they're angled toward you. Keep in mind, the seat will absorb a lot of the sound, it's just an option. This would be more ideal for 1 or 2 way 6x9s that carry the low frequency sounds, but you'll still need a couple 10"-12" subs to have a great sounding system.

Re: Door speakers
Not denying any of the above advice, just stating from my personal experience: When I was doing the system in my 2nd gen s10 I searched through those forums a lot for what other people had done. S10's have dash speakers also albeit much bigger ones, but they also have door speakers stock, as do most new cars. I did buy a set of decent speakers to go into the dash at first and they didn't make that much of a difference, but once I bought the components for the doors it was a totally different animal. Personally, I wouldn't cut the doors up just because I don't like the look of it in these trucks, but I do think you would get good volume, especially in a truck cab.
Now onto what Koda is saying, volume isn't quality. I have a pair of 12" JLw0's in that s10. It's loud, yes, it also sounds like crap if you put the volume up too high. The same goes for speakers. Just because they are loud doesn't mean you will enjoy what you are listening to. Get the acoustics right and you'll enjoy every song a lot more than any garbled thumping civic. One last thing, while I agree that around the gas tank is a great place for speakers, 6x9's are considered a mid-bass. This means that they are much better at putting out lower frequencies like a subwoofer. Yes, they make good sound by themselves, but a set of components has better quality because of its shape. A round speaker makes better noise than an ellipsoidal one. If you already have a set of tweeters or speakers up front, then a mid-bass would be a great way to round out the system.

Re: Door speakers
Id go with the kick panel speakers. Plenty of companies have them readily available and you dont have to chop up the doors.
