what is best way to clean and paint frame?
I have my truck mostly taken apart and I want to clean and coat the frame with something. I'm on a budget since all my money went to porterbuilt and don't have the money to powder coat my frame so what is my next best option for doing it myself? I don't have any body work experience, I just want my frame to look newer and have a protective coating on it.

I find POR expensive and it's not as good as its said to be..
I would go buy a cheap sandblaster and sand.. Sandblast the frame. Paint it with GM reconditioning paint. It goes over bare metal just like GM did when these trucks were built new. Posted via Mobile Device |

I've been looking at Master Series Coatings: http://www.masterseriescoatings.com/index/. I've seen a number of threads on this site where members recommend using this for frames/floors, etc. It's supposed to be better than POR 15 and less expensive. Can't speak from experience...yet. Hopefully in 3-6 months I can give my opinion. - Matt

I used POR15 prep products and then the gloss black. Very durable product and really not all that expensive in my opinion. It will "chalk" if exposed to sunlight however. My frame looks fantastic and is well protected.

Go to the dollar store buy some cheap oven cleaner (PowerHouse - yellow can). Spray on let sit pressure wash off. Scrape with a putty knife, wire wheel on a drill. Rinse and repeat. I used Eastwoods chassis black paint and primer. Went on easy holds up nicely and is not that expensive. Just need to apply a few coats. If you brush the primer on be carefull it drys pretty quick and you could see brush strokes.

When you use the POR-15 Marine Clean... you don't have to scrape anything off but the thickest gunk areas (like the crossmnember under the engine). Best part about it is... you don't need a pressure washer, and only need to do it once.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone. Cleaning will be easy because my frame is super clean for its age with a few surface rust spots. Thanks for the info.

I have frames sand blasted (alot faster & better than wire wheel) and paint them with satin/antique black Chassis Saver. http://www.magnetpaints.com/underbody.asp
