New to me, bad tranny cause engine to die out???
Driving down the road and truck starts to sputter. Put it in neutral and it still dies. Park it and check tranny fluid which shows incredibly low. Truck fires up revs fine. put in gear drives a little starts to sputter, put it in neutral try to rev a little but just dies and wont start back up while rolling. I was able to start it and limp it home at 35mph. So I figure tranny is burnt up but would that cause engine to die and not want to restart in neutral while rolling? My past experience is it would not shift or no power to the rear wheels. weird to me. Also made a weird clicking noise over 5 mph. Not when stopped though, I also contribute this to the transmission.
BTW 350/350 72 long bed 3/4 ton. Any help would be great as I plan on taking tranny out and having it rebuilt with new torque converter. Anything else I should look at?? I thought a new fuel pump but when I got home, parked it and rev'ed it in park with no issues. Thanks, -B |

not sure why a trans would make the motor run bad.....but if you know you have a bad trans. i guess start there and see if a good rebuild on the trans would fix the problem, good luck....

fuel filter? takes so long to "suck it dry"...and it will run again after sitting a minute.

Have you done anything with the motor lately? It sounds more like a fuel issue with the sputtering and dying. I know its been hot out here lately, that's making me think it might be more fuel related. the clicking might be the speedo cable. sometimes they need a good lube squirted down them. It helped mine. do you have a fuel filter after the pump or a q-jet with one in it?

Re: New to me, bad tranny cause engine to die out???
Well, I don't think it is the fuel because I can rev the crap out of it without issue. It only dies when I am going above 45 and then starts to sputter and die. Q-jet carb with a new fuel filter in it. Rebuilt carb. I was thinking it was the fuel pump until I was able to get the revs up in neutral and park. The tranny was below the fill line and makes me think something is up with the trans and or torque converter locking the motor up???? LIke I said, new to me because I have had T350's before and it just wouldn't shift. So I am thinking transmission but up for more opinions.
When I did put it into gear it goes in with a nice hard shift though. Maybe just torque converter damaged?? |

The 350 has a modulator valve for shifting which is actuated by vacuum so check the line from the valve to the back of the Q-jet for leaks or hose came off.
Low trans fluid will also cause it not to shift.

Re: New to me, bad tranny cause engine to die out???
Well, shifting doesnt actually seem to be a problem. It shifts into gear firmly but when I get going to speed I can hear the rattling and then it starts to sputter like it is running out of gas but has gas. The rattling is like a loose exhaust bracket but everything is nice and tight.
I am leaning toward the torque converter and trans for now. I will keep you guys posted though and keep the opinions coming. I like hearing ideas and finding new things out. This one kinda has me stumped. |

Oh and there is a small pool of tranny fluid on the truck now after I filled it. Looks like a loose rubber line. YAY for me.

Re: New to me, bad tranny cause engine to die out???
After some research I do believe the converter is locking up and causing the engine to die. I don't like doing things twice so I am going to rebuild the transmission while I am at it. Better safe than sorry. unfortunately it is going to be atleast a $475 bill it looks like. Oh well.
