I have a 1957 GMC Deluxe and looking to purchase a period correct air under dash air conditioning unit. Does anyone have any info or pictures of one?

Re: 1955-59 GMC air conditioner
there is no period correct ac unit for 57, first ac in a truck was 59 and it was floor mount.
any 60s era under dash unit will be r12, not much r12 anything floating around anymore. vintage air has a neat mark IV under dash unit that looks very 60s and has a metal case and chrome face plate very retro looking, it looks like they brought back an old unit

Re: 1955-59 GMC air conditioner
Many R12 systems can be changed over to 134. Smart money would be replacing the original hoses, compressor, any drier, and maybe even the control valves as well. All the replacement parts would be compatible with R134. The system might not be as cold with 134 but it's still cooler than none at all.

Re: 1955-59 GMC air conditioner
I still have two systems set up for R12 and they are ice cold- even when not moving. My local NAPA sells freeze 12 - which is compatible in the R12 system for about 12$ a can. Just a thought...

Re: 1955-59 GMC air conditioner
Beware of the freeze12. Major component is propane. Your evaporator core springs a leak, you might go kaboom.
