402 BBC Timing

Hey Y'all,

Sorry if this has already been posted on here.

Basically, I can't find the timing mark on my crankshaft gear. For this engine, is it the key slot?

Thanks.

Re: 402 BBC Timing

Is the engine in the truck completely built? You talkin' about the keyway on the crank snout? The timing mark in gonna be on the harmonic balancer. If it's not a new rebuild... it's prolly covered with oil and gunk.

Re: 402 BBC Timing

I think he's talking about the marks for cam timing.....should be a center punch mark on crank gear..if memory serves it does line with crank keyway...find the punch mark and put straight up..cam gear mark straight down with chain installed..bolt up......rotate engine till cam gear mark is on top and that is #1 tdc..stab distributor with rotor to #1...she will run......jim

Re: 402 BBC Timing

Yah, i'm talking about the cam shaft and crank shaft timing. I looked for the punch on the crankshaft gear for timing and i don't see one, that's why i wondered if it lines up with the key slot or not.

Re: 402 BBC Timing

went back and looked that up...put the keyway at the 2 o'clock position and look for an "o" up by the tooth that is on top..should be there...jim

That's it...straight up like that...timing gear dot straight down in line with it...that puts cam in time with crank...rotate crank 360* with dot back up again and cam gear dot UP also...thats puts #1 tdc....install dist. with rotor facing #1 plug terminal...she will fire......Make sure u tighten cam gear before rotating crank.....jim
