Thanks, everytime I look at it I want to try something else. I may just age the wood I have on it now and age the copper and give it a break for a bit. I'll come back later with some good wood and maybe some other ideas. Getting time to move my attention to something else on the truck. Have you thought about some other ideas for your rack? Re: Diy roof rack 2 fleetside?????
I do have an idea for an awning/sunshade that would hang off the side. It seems like we are always hunting shade at a show and it would be nice to bring your own. I mocked it up but never took a picture. Maybe I'll do it again and take pic to update my old thread.

Re: Diy roof rack 2 fleetside?????
update on the rack. I disassembled it, sanded the wood and aged the wood . I first made some strong tea and put it in a spray bottle and sprayed the wood. After that dried I mixed white vinegar, ammonia and 0000 steel wool in a bottle and let sit for 24 hours. The steel wool disolves some. I brushed it on with a brush and turns the wood a dark gray/ brownish color. Just need to sand it down a little to lighten some areas and then lacquer it. The rails I thankfully did not have to pee on them to age them. I used a mixture of salt and white vinegar. It makes a greenish mold on the copper and discolors it. I will post some photos. It was amazing to see the wood turn so dark after about 30 seconds of the steel wool mixture. It goes on almost clear.

Well that really came out nice and I really like the "Aging" process you did on the rack!
What will go up top now? ....The LOOK really goes well with the Trucks overall theme; Congratulations.

The stain/aging looks good. I think you made the right choice for your truck. I bet many copycats will follow with their own version.

Looks good. You need to get the before and after pictures on the same page (aging/staining).
How did you connect the copper tubing? Is it sturdy enough to tie down to? |

Good idea, I'll post some. The tubing is welded together and has a bolt going thru the bottom into the wood. I wouldn't trust it with too much, but it's a truck with a bed when am I really going to use a roof rack ![]() |
