A good buy or should I just forget it?

Hey all, coming here for some 60-66 advice.

A guy in the neighborhood is selling a 60-66 K/20 plow truck he has had for 30 years. 4 speed, 283 from a chevelle he rebuilt when he got the truck. I haven't seen it leave the yard in 15 years. I've always wanted it, and its been sitting unused since he got a "newer" plow truck last year. This morning it moved from his backyard to the side of the road with a for sale sign.

There isn't much sheet metal left. Cab floors are rotted bad. Core support is barely there. Doors are crushed badly, altho they open and close without issue. Frame is solid, as well as the flatbed on the back. The old knobby snow tires hold air, and I believe it still runs.

I want a funky old plow/yard truck, but not if it crumbles in on me when I'm using it! It won't see the road as I have my 86 C10 for hauling. Is it worth it?

I'm guessing no plow on it? I'd offer him 600. and take it home

do you want to just use it as is or do you plan to restore it someday? If a restore, sure sounds like a big job. Usually reserved for trucks with sentimental value. $500 - 600 is all I would pay for a running, driving, rust bucket.

I wouldn’t take the asking price too seriously. It may just be on the sign as a conversation starter. The owner might take half that much (or even less) if anyone shows interest. It doesn’t sound like something that could be realistically restored or even offer much in the way of parts, so there probably won’t be much demand from classic truck guys.

The better question might be do you really think it remains viable for plowing (at any price), or is it only useful as yard art.

I would buy it for $400 and part it out no problem, or drive it to the ground. If the rust and damage are as bad as you say I wouldn't buy it for a project....

Yes it still has the complete plow setup on the truck.

I'd like to use it for its intended purpose for a few years and then repair the structural sheetmetal at least.

I think its worth $800 if it runs and drives fairly well, especially for what you want it for.

you can always purchase a cab and doors from down south. Just be ready for all the work that will come with restoring a truck thats rotted.

I'd offer him less than 800 of course, he'll probably take it. For your intended use though, I'd say its totally worth it, especially if you aren't heart broken about the cab condition. We all have chevy's here, we know these old rust buckets will run till the wheels fall off. I say buy it and give the old girl the pleasure of working as she was intended to for a few more years.

i'd offer around $400, if the running gear & frame is solid, not to many factory 4x4 left. just my to cents
