No engine made likes back pressure. Your gain in torque was possibly from increased exhaust velocity. This is why some engines will run better overall with a 2-1/5 inch pipe over a 3 inch pipe. There is more exhaust velocity a lower rpm/smaller engine will get more flow from a small pipe over a 3" pipe!

Apply this to cyl heads as well on the intake port runners

I'm about ready for new exhaust on the ole' girl.. this is my 454 with Hookers to 2 1/2" to turbos and pipes out the rear... thinking about 3" pipes and Flowmasters with pipes straight out the back... but, I don't want it to sound like a mustang!
