Re: finished... Repairing cracked fiberglass top
Nice repare job. How is the lexan holding up? I have some replacement glass ready for my hatch when I get it repared, but might look at going with the lexan if it is lighter and resistant to scratches, discoloration and such.

Re: finished... Repairing cracked fiberglass top
Holding up great so far! It is alot lighter, probably weighs about 5 to 10 lbs. Lexan will scratch easily though. To clean it I run the water hose on it and wipe with a really soft rag...never use paper towels. Dry it by just kind of dobbing it dry instead of wiping. Then a coat of plastic/lexan wax cleaner every now & then seems to keep it from discoloring. This is what we did with all our drag car & it worked!

Re: Repairing cracked fiberglass top
Looks like you did pretty good with the top...I'd love to see you post some up close photos. Not that we're checking your work or anything

Re: Repairing cracked fiberglass top
One tip-The regular auto parts store bondo brand resin is JUNK, go to lowes and get their epoxy resin kit in the paint dept- polyester resin doesn't want to stick good to anything. epoxy will bond much better.

Re: Repairing cracked fiberglass top
Way after this thread started, I came across www.fiberglassforums.com. I know I've mentioned the site in other posts, but I'll say again: a tremendous amount of information about glassing. I thought I knew something about the subject, then I started reading what some of these guys do and it's just incredible.
Guess it would have been helpful to have several years ago, but maybe it'll inspire some newer repairs...

Re: Repairing cracked fiberglass top
Longhorn, I talked to a boat repair guy here in Temecula that does some pretty good work on fiberglass/smc. If you do a google search for "Doc Dings" he should pop up. The down side was he is pricey...I bought a can of epoxy and just started my own top this week...

Re: Repairing cracked fiberglass top
Yes...do the research and get the resin/epoxy that is compatible with the SMC, I bought the Evercoat brand. If you use the incorrect stuff it has a tendancy to expand and contract at different rates than the rest of the top. Also be sure to prep the areas properly, the boat repair guy told me that was a key, as well as ratio of hardner and resin.
