I put my new alternator in tonight and when I go to start the truck it makes a loud whinning noise that sounds like it is comming from the starter. Whats wrong? Any help would be great! Thanks, Jon

Did this noise start when ya put in the alternator? are ya sure its from the starter? how long does this noise last? does it increase/decrease when ya rev the motor?
If ya just put on the alternator and it started id check to see if the belt is loose or slipping. If its slipping you may have to scuff the pulleys on it with some sandpaper and re adjust the belt to get the slippage to stop. this could also be to junk getting onto the air pump pulley or belt when removing the alternator
if you get a whining noise from the starter it usually stops when the starter stops spinning, and it usually means the demise of the starter

If you just put on an alt...and your squealing...more than likely you have got the belt way too tight!!... Make sure it has some play...but not too much.

Oh...and if that doesent fix it..you might have gotten a bad alternator.

Thanks for the help, I'll make sure my belt is not too tight, I used a crowbar to hold it while I tighted it. Ya know how when your truck is running and you accidently turn the key again and it screeches. It sounds like that when I go to start it. I'm I grinding any teeth? Can I still drive it till I get it fixed?

Is it just when you start it or all the time? If it's all the time then you are looking at the belt or alternator. If it's just when you try to start it then it could be a starter not aligning up right with the flexplate.

It only does it when I start it. The belt is fine. The starter is only about 1 year old, but it is right next to the header. Mybe it gets to hot. I've seen other threads about shims, but I don't know how to do it or where they go. Is it hard to do? I put the starter in myself. Thanks.
