'99 Silverado Cranking Issue - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello, I'm new to the board, so I thought I would start off with a problem solving question. I have a 1999 Silverado 1500 2wd with the 5.3. The truck has 235,000 miles on it. My problem is, sometimes it acts like it is out of gas when trying to crank it. First thing in the morning, no problem what so ever. It fires right up like it should. But if I drive 10 minutes away and park it for 10+ minutes, then try to re-crank it, it just turn over and over and over then will finally start. I can drive it to work (25 miles away) in the morning and when I go to lunch 4 hours later, it will do the same thing.

It almost seems like it is flooded when it does finally crank, and will occasionally puff a little rich smelling blue smoke. I replaced the fuel pump/sending unit a couple years ago. Earlier this year I replaced all four O2 sensors when it had a "Service Engine Soon" light on.

Has anyone else run into this problem before? I would like to fix it pretty soon because I know it can't be good. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I know you said you replaced the fuel pump, but mine was doing the exact same thing a couple years ago. The check valve went bad in the fuel pump allowing the fuel to drain back into the tank. Easiest way to check is to hook up a fuel pressure gauge. Start the truck, watch the gauge, then shut the truck off. The pressure should hold. When I shut mine off, I could watch the pressure drop to zero. Based on a lot of internet reading it's highly recommended to only use delco or delphi pumps, the knock offs don't last.

Remove the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator on the driver's side center of the intake manifold. Check for gas to spill out of the hose.
If you have fuel....Replace the fuel pressure regulator.

This could be your flooding issue.

Hey, thanks for the comments. This morning I drove the truck to run a few errands and when I got home, I checked the fuel pressure regulator. I did notice some fuel leaking out when I pulled the hose. So it should remain dry, correct? This is what I found. Thanks!

Yup needs to be dry. Replace it.

Just an update. I replaced the regulator and it's been cranking just like should ever since. Thank you so much for the help! You saved me a ton of money. My neighbor is a mechanic and I've asked him what he thought about it and he said everything from the pump to the injectors, and even the throttle body. He's one who would keep throwing parts on it until it fixes itself. Thanks again!!
