Thinking my head gasket was leaking, I had already ordered new head gaskets and intake gaskets from Summit. Today, I start taking everything apart. I pull the intake and too my surprise, the leak wasn't the head gasket but on the back rail of the engine. The RTV had broken loose from the rail. Oil had been seeping out there. Also, the intake gasket was leaking at the very rear bolt. What it looks like to me was the intake gasket was leaking and seeping around the rear bolt hole, running down the back of the engine and with the heat had loosened up the RTV enough for it to let oil leak out over the rail. I cleaned it all up and put the intake back on. I sent the head gaskets back.

I sure am happy. I wasn't wanting to take off the heads. Intake by itself is not too bad.

Good Question!! I haven't heard much about it. Mike you need to spend more care on that 79. I may have some parts come free here in a couple days if everything works out if you need them.

I could use some luck as well for my poor 350, i'm afraid it has rod knock but i'm pulling the cam to check it for rounded lobes, hopefully thats all it is. If not I guess the 406 is going in before I was planning on doing it, hoped to get through the winter before swapping engines.

The 79 just sits in the drive mostly. Don't drive it much. The wife used it some to haul pine bark in, that's about it. I tuned it up real good and put in a new oil pan gasket and rear main seal that was leaking. The dumbass who had it before me thought you could just fill the hole in the tranny dust cover with silicone and stop the oil from leaking.

I need to rebuild the carb and adjust the choke. It's just a driver and hauler. I'll drive it when I need a truck this winter so I won't have to drive the 85. Not worried about rusting since it already has some.

Luck is something that is rare around these parts, at least for me. I feel like I won the lottery when something like this happens. Most of the time it would have been much worse.

Have the same problem with mine, Ive just been to lazy to fix it. The wife will be gone all weekend and I guess Ill do it then so I wont have her nagging me while I work. Tired of the oil everywhere too.

A old trick is to take a sharp center punch and lightly dimple the surface before you lay a rubber pan rail gasket down........might work with silicone too.

Mike, glad you got some good news finally...it is always good to luck out once in a while.

Your "work truck" should have a 3/4 drop if you ask me...it will still handle and haul just as good!

The van is a work truck. I drive it every day. The 79 is just another truck, for hauling stuff around the house. Wife uses it most of the time. I very seldom drive it. Reason I don't drive the van everywhere except for work is all the tools in the back rattle and flop so much it will drive you crazy.

I got the 85 back on the road today. Everything is doing fine.
