Basic Carb Questions

I've been thinking about upgrading the Rochester 2BBL currently in my '77. Think of it as not only an upgrade but also an opportunity to learn...

I've been looking at an Edelbrock Performer 600CFM and an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold. What kind of things do I need to know when choosing the right parts?

For example:
-Electric or Manual Choke?
-EGR or no EGR?

I'm ready to soak up some carb wisdom.

EDIT: Original 305 motor completely stock

Re: Basic Carb Questions

Well my 74 chevy has a
305 motor performer 2101 intake and a #1806 650 cfm edelbrock carb on mine
worked good
some people say you need a spacer or adapter for a square bore to spread bore or something like that, i didnt and has been working good
no need to adjust, i just bolted mine on and it was good
used the stock throttle linkage
i have a electric choke and no egr

Re: Basic Carb Questions

Electric choke or manual. Matter of preference. Get rid of egr though.

In my opinion I would also look at what your future intentions with the truck are as well, but I've "heard" dont quote me on it, I've heard some states require you to have EGR, but like I said I'm not sure I've only heard, but I definitely would go with an electric choke over manual.

Re: Basic Carb Questions

The reason frog didn't need an adapter is because the edelbrock intake he bought has a square bore already on it. The stock intakes have a spread bore and you will need an adapter although a spacer is usually a good idea regardless, IMO. I just got done rebuilding my 1406 600cfm edelbrock and it was easy as pie. However out of the box it is tuned for economy and has an electric choke. The 1405 is tuned for performance and has a manual choke. You can swap chokes and retune fairly easily. I'd pass on egr if local law allows it and the 2101 performer intake is a good starter intake but if you are looking to make big power plan on getting a different one later.
