Headers ??

Hello

I have a 87 R20 350 tbi and my stock manifolds are being a pita. So I was thinking about getting some headers. And after searching and reading for hours now. I'd thought I'd just ask. Long tube, mid length, or shorty's? Would there be any real difference in a stock 350 tbi as a daily driver?

Thanks

Re: Headers ??

For convenience of running pipes and in my opinion a better look and performance, long tubes. I have been running Hedman Elites for the last few set due to 3/8 flange, the ball type collector, quality and accurate fit. They do cost a little more but the fit better than any I have ever installed. I use the ceramic ones and I have been very pleased.

Re: Headers ??

if you plan on lowering your truck more than 5 inchs up front you want to rethink long tubes. but besides that they are great. also dont cheap out and get painted ones they will burn off that paint and rust so fast. get ceramic coated ones. or jet-hot coated like i have.

Re: Headers ??

No lowering planed, and I was thinking about stainless. I guess my main concerns are fitting them and O2 sensor. The mid's I found have the o2 sensor bung, but the long tubes don't.

Re: Headers ??

Long tubes will give you better sound and low end torque. As for the O2s, you can get the weld in bungs for next to nothin.

Re: Headers ??

If you spend the money on long tube Doug's or Doug thorley they don't hang lower than the frame. Then you have nice ceramic covered headers that don't rub

Re: Headers ??

You can get collectors with the O2 bung in them for about $25 from Summt if needed.

I've never run Doug's but they have been around for 40 years so they must have something going for them.

Re: Headers ??

If you move the O2 sensor that far back (to the bungs) make sure to switch to a preheated sensor and save yourself some headaches.

Re: Headers ??

I just bought and installed some headers from O'rielly's for my 87' R10, since they never seem to have anything that fits a R10 but had some for a 86 C10 in stock I took those... Cheap ones $150 I also have a TBI 350 and there is a O2 on the drivers side... No place had a bung so we cut one of a stock Harley pipe and welded it in the drivers side header... The air pump tubing or whatever that was running from the exhaust behind the motor was a PITA to remove but other then that it was easy.

Stock Harley pipes

Done...

How low is your truck?? Measurment from fender to level ground would help. Looking for headers but dont have much clearance with a 26.5 tall tire and 5 inch drop in the front. Dont really like the chevelle headers due to plug wire routing was a PITA on the chevelle i just got done building.

Re: Headers ??

Stock ride height for 3/4 ton 2wd and 30" tires. No plans to lower it, so I don't think ground clearance is going to be a problem. But thanks plug wire routing is something to consider.

I'm on a 6-8 drop. Still saving for Doug's long tubes with O/2 bungs but they are still out of my budget. All I know is Doug's sit about 4in higher next the frame and you need a double humP crossmember
