POR15 on my frame, what about nuts and bolts?

hi guys,

couple of weeks ago I got the engine bay cleaned with steam to find an oile leak I was looking for. Found it and now want to prep the car again for winter.





I bought some silver and black POR15 I wanted to use for the frame (black) and brackets (silver) on the engine.

Now I dont want to take everything apart, because its our daily driver. So can I just paint over the nuts and bolts? they say you wont be able to loosen them anymore if you do so? anybody ever tried this?

They WILL loosen no problem.

I just removed a four inch lift kit that the PO installed and POR-15 over every nut, bolt and bug he could find. I too had the same worries but it just clogged the thread of the bolts.

I would have recommended something better than POR15. You have it so use it. Do you have a compressor? Buy some plastic bags. Cover up anything you don't want to paint. Use an inexpensive paint gun from Harbor Freight. Using a small compressor, the bigger the better, spray the entire engine bay. Degrease everything good first.

A nice looking engine bay earns these!!

In case anyone asks about my recommendation.

I've used both POR15 and ZeroRust. I like ZeroRust. Using a paint gun, the texture, look, and feel are nice on metal. I coated my entire engine bay with it.

thanks for the replies guys.

The thing with my engine bay is that its in my car and I cant take it apart for some days, nor use a spray gun to paint it. I'll have to to it in front of the house and assembled. Thats why I asked.

If no one else comments about nuts not coming loose. then I'll move forward on it sometime soon, because slowly autumn is moving in over here...more and more rain and nights are getting cooler slowly

Ok, if you go with a even a light/medium coat of POR15, yes you will not be able to remove nuts. POR15 dries like a coat of power coating!! Now if you spray it, you might be able to get way away with removing nuts with effort. Either way be careful what you use POR15 on. One more reason I like ZeroRust. I don't have to worry about removing bolts or nuts. With the engine sitting on the frame and covered, I spray painted the entire firewall and frame.

ok, thanks. I see the ZeroRust is phenolic Alkyd based paint.
Now I can get rustoleum protective enamel over here, its called Combicolor in the Netherlands.

is that the same?

I liked the POR15 because is dries relatively quick and has this tough and glossy finish. but If I cant remove bolts afterward if I paint it with a brush, then I might go with a different product.

I guess my combicolor is as close as it gets to ZeroPaint...

Maybe I'll just paint some with POR15 and the parts where the bolts are with Combicolor...they both finish glossy
