I don't think it looks horrible, that said it might be a bit much. The chrome on my 69's grill was totally shot so I used some acid to remove it then polished the aluminum. I was going to clear it but never got around to it, now I use some Mothers to freshen it up when it gets dull. You might give it a try if there aren't too many dings in it. I can't remember what acid I used but it worked fast and wasn't as tough as I thought it was going to be.
