Ls1 swapped '70 w/pics

Hey guys,

Just finishing up some small touches and tidbits on my c-10 ls1 swap.
You guys have helped out tremendously during this project, so I decided to post up a couple updated pics. The truck runs great. Idles good, shifts good, just all around nice. Only 1 complaint thus far and it happens to be slight vibration around 50-60 mph....hopefully i can track it down.

Goin back together:

Looking good, man! I might just try and see it in person soon. I've been thinking of taking a road trip to Jonesboro to see some old friends, and I'm jonesin' for some catfish from Ron's.

well. I'm startin to think my pinion angle is
the cause of my vibrations..... gonna grab a angle finder today
and will report back

Re: Ls1 swapped '70 w/pics

could be, mine was bad too, and it liked to bunny hop taking off, so I move it up a few degrees and it went away.....think the LS tranny's need a few extra degrees down compared to the sbc stuff...

PM coming tour way. Yeah, since I moved back to Tennessee, nobody here does catfish like the fresh farm raised stuff there. It's kinda like going to the coast and getting fresh seafood compared to frozen.

Re: Ls1 swapped '70 w/pics

did you use an angle finder when putting the engine in? Before you change the pinion angle at the rear end, you want to see if you can get around 4* at the engine, then change the rear end pinion the correct amount to align the driveline angles.

the engine is right at 0*. can't go up anymore cause of trans
tunnel too close. can't really go down because my driver side header
wont clear the top of the a arm. don't think I can get -4 on the
trans...... the rearend pinion is at +3* which is way off for 0 at the
trans end. especially when a load is applied.

and moose, it kinda does feel like a bunny hop lol. I can feel it
in 2nd gear all the way til about 50 or a bit more

I was gonna try a 4* shim in the rear and hopefully with
the load applied it will put it close to parallel with the trans yoke
????

Re: Ls1 swapped '70 w/pics

thats a little ugly... You can't even get a degree down on the motor? running at 0* is NOT ideal.

Re: Ls1 swapped '70 w/pics

well I was under the impression from lots and lots of reading
that it doesn't really matter what the motor is sitting as long
as you have the shaft at 0* working angle under load...... which
I could accomplish with 4* shims.

I guess if I get the shims in and it still has some vibration I could
raise the tranny about a degree and the rearend would still be real
close being right with -1*

Re: Ls1 swapped '70 w/pics

there is truth to that BUT
LSx motors are set to between -2 and -4 to facilitate oil drain back to the pans pickup (not sure if it matters for dry sump cars)
and
its also supposed to help the steam that can get in the heads (these motors have the steam lines as well), from forming hot pockets on cyl #7 and #8

I see what your saying, but what about vettes?? the engine sits
at 0* in that platform. no known oiling issues or steam issues.....

Re: Ls1 swapped '70 w/pics

hence why I had a little aside about dry sump cars.
The vettes also have 2 sets of steam lines, vs just the front crossover on truck engines.

Re: Ls1 swapped '70 w/pics

all c5 vettes were wet sump cars and in 2001+ the ls6 intake only had one set of steam vents like my ls1...

I don't wanna get into a debate on weather or not you can run an ls
motor at 0* because it has been done a million times with no
I'll effects thus far. Just trying to solve pinion angle issues

Straight from classic performance (I'm not arguing, I'm trying to get your truck on the road)

"Also, Chevy engines run on the four-degree rule. That is, the engine usually sits on a four-degree downward angle from front to back. Even though the LS engines sit at a zero angle in the Vettes, the four degrees is recommended to help with your pinion angle."

Re: Ls1 swapped '70 w/pics

awesome. which means -1* pinion angle and 0* engine angle would be roughly the same as
3* pinion and -3* engine angle.

You can also flip your front trailing arm mounts to help with your pinion angle. Or switch to a two piece driveshaft. Just a couple more options for you to consider. Let us know how it comes out. Cool truck btw, .
