My truck has a 350 engine but every time I'm changing the oil is hard to find the filter that goes inside a container. Can this modified into one piece oil filter?

Usually the 350s had the spin-on disposable type filter. I'm not a V8 expert, but I think they produced the 283, 305, and 327 thru the '68 model year. I think 1967 was the pivot year for the replaceable-element type oil filter. There is an adapter to convert cannister type oil filters to spin-on type.
What year engine are we talking about?

I don't know 68OS. My truck is 69 but now I'm thinking the engine is probbaly older.

My 69 Custom/30 has the cartridge filter and it's original.

I get filters from Summit and always keep a few extra's around as they are tough to find anymore. They seem to have the best price too.

A conversion kit is available to change to spin on filters if that's what you want.

My 67 283 had the cartridge, did the spin on filter swap. 67 was the last year for 283.

Yes - I'd assume it's not a 350 - probably an earlier year transplant if you have the canister type oil filter. I'm with ETsC10 - I have always gotten my filters from NAPA, they usually have them and they aren't too expensive. If you're in a bind, the "truck vendors" (LMC, etc) usually carry them, but you'll pay a premium price - check locally, especially NAPA, and possibly carquest, firts.

now that's funny! I had a 68 327 in a 57 chev - and it had a spin-on (non-adapted) filter.

Could it be that the changeover from cansiter to spin-on occurred at the same time as the changeover between large and small journal cranks? i.e. "newer" 327 just before it went out of production?

Hey profe56 - if you really want to know what you have, posting the engine block numbers would solve the mystery - the casting number off the driver's side back side of the block is probably the best # to post.

Still could be a 350. As I mentioned, my 69 which has a 350 has the cartridge filter and it's original. Mine is a custom/30 1 ton so not sure if that has anything to do with it or not.

Post the numbers here from the front stamping pad and one of us can decode it to find out what it really is.

Yes: I think I should know what I've in my truck. This morning I checked the spark plugs and the 8th is passing oil. I'll start to look for a 350.

In my last visit at the GOOD GUY's Show at del mar I bought a set of aluminum valve covers, and aluminum air filter canister and also I've an edelbrock intake
and I think is the time to use it

I visit very often the junk yards, specially those where you use your own tools. and I;ve seen big engines than 350s any parts of those engines have a good valu?

17 = 17th

The last 2 or 3 digits are the engine codes. Using an old LMC Truck catalog, I get [ '68 292 L6: UH, UT, UP, UO, U3, UM, UQ, UR, UN.]
['69 307: UU, UQ UA, UC, UD, UE, UM, UN, UF, UO, UP.]
This is by no means a complete listing. Also LMC sells repop parts, not accuracy. Obviously we're talking about a V8 engine.
There are some web sites that specialize in block numbers, maybe someone has a link?

We still don't know what year or what actual displacement.
