PS Pulley wobble

Ths is a PS pulley, the type that is held on by a nut, that had a wobble in it. I firgured I had nothing to lose so I took a 5/8" steel dowel and removed enough of the wobble to be acceptable for my use. The pump was mounted to my engine so I would mark the wobble as it turned on the pump and then use the dowel, holding the pulley on a flat surface with my feet, to move it a bit. I didn't get to rough with it. Tried not to bend the leaves with my weight. I guess there is a point were you could go to far and do further damage. Like I said I had nothing to lose but time and this method looks a litle crude but helped in my case.

Re: PS Pulley wobble

Interesting, how hard was it to get the pulley off? Mine has a slight wobble also, but always been a little worried about taking that pulley off for the first time in 42 yrs...

Re: PS Pulley wobble

Wobble is usually caused by the pulley having been removed previously without using the correct puller.

Re: PS Pulley wobble

I believe it's also caused by improperly changing the belts. The back PS bolt is behind the pulley and sometimes needs to be removed to install a tight new belt. Well that bolt almost, but doesn't quite come out--unless you put a little pressure on the pulley. Which will bend it. Kind of hard to explain, but i'm pretty sure this is how mine got slightly bent. I know if that bolt was 1/8" shorter changing all my belts would be a lot easier. I have a 402, so not sure if this is case with other engines or just mine.

I had my pump off the truck and used a steering wheel puller.
After removing the nut there is a lip that I slipped the edges of 2 carriage bolt
Heads under. It came off with out to much trouble.
