64 GMC Rear Drum Question

I am working on a 64 GMC 2wd 1000series. It originally had 4 wheel drum. I just finished up the front disc conversion and I am working on re-doing the back drum brakes. I have gone to autozone and O'reillys and neither carry a rear drum hardware kit. I can only find for the front. I know both drums are 11X2, so I am wondering if they are the same?

If anyone is sure or has done this, any input is helpful.

Secondly, if I were to want to change to a 5 lug from 6 lug, what all is entailed since I will already have the rear apart...?

Re: 64 GMC Rear Drum Question

the simplest thing for you to do if you are keep the original axles and drums is to have them redrilled for 5 lug, i know companies such as mosier offers that service, but a local competent machine should should be able to do it for you as well and the cost is usually pretty low

Re: 64 GMC Rear Drum Question

autozone is where i bought mine for my 64 gmc. wheel cilinders and everything. one thing i found out though to get new drums you need to order them for a 72 chevy blazer 4 wheel drive. because the drums are wider and the chevy wont fit

Shop around, I just got drums/hardware kits/pads/lines from Orielly with free shipping, cheaper than local pickup at autozone.

Re: 64 GMC Rear Drum Question

Good info & great timing. I plan on going through all 4 drums on a 66 c20 this weekend. It's been sitting since '04 when I parked it. I best get to napa tomorrow to see if they have everything. I want to replace everything but the drums. Also might add a better break master cylinder & if I want to get fancy a booster =)

Re: 64 GMC Rear Drum Question

More than likely your GMC has the Dana 44 differential. Brake parts are more difficult to find and are not the same as for a Chevy truck 12 bolt. If I remember correctly there are 2 members that have posted where they have found the drums and hardware. Member markeb01 is one of them, but I don't remember the other. A quick search might turn up something if they don't chime in here.

Re: 64 GMC Rear Drum Question

Your '66 C20 will likely have the Eaton HO52 differential. Parts for those are getting hard to find and often times $$$ when you do. You may get lucky though.

Re: 64 GMC Rear Drum Question

markreed:
I am unsure what parts you are looking for. The discussion on the drums for the 1000 series GMC is here:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=412665

Those Dana 44 rear ends like your truck were used extensively, especially in Jeeps. You shouldn't have any problems finding hardware if you use the Jeep listings up through the 80's.

I hope this is helpful.
