88 a/c - converting r12 to r134a?

Ive got an 88 monte carlo that im pullin apart for my 68 gmc build. so far ive got the motor pulled, and i was thinking about using the air condition from the car in my truck but id really rather use r134a instead of the r12 that the system currently uses. does anyone know what is entailed in converting a r12 system to r134? i know its possible and have seen 'kits' but i figured id ask to get some background. thanks

Generally you want to flush the old system because R134A uses a differant oil. Would also need a new compressor (R134A compatible) and all the seals on all the lines. What you could do is get some Freeze 12 and a Freeze 12 oil charge. Freeze 12 is compatible with R12 systems. You should always replace seals (O-rings) whenever you disconnect. Hook it up and charge it up. If you have R12 gauges you can get a side tap can adapter, or if you need to use a R134A charger you can get R134A fittings that screw onto your R12 ports. Make sure you take your valve cores out of your R12 ports on your system, these fittings will stay on after you're done.
