Vivair compressor amp draw

I have a new vivair compressor, what kind of amp draw should I have across the ice cube relay? I am getting about a 2 - 2-1/2 amp drop across the relay. This causes the compressor to fail on low amps. The compressor is getting very hot to the touch. I am running a accuair speed switch system.

Did you look on Viair's website?

Re: Vivair compressor amp draw

Yes did not see anything that would help. Just trying to figure out if the compressor is bad. Seems like a lot of draw to me. It will only run for maybe 1 minute and them shuts off due to less than 10.5 amps.

Re: Vivair compressor amp draw

What model compressor is it? Should say on the label, and if it was removed, a part number will be engraved into the front crankcase behind the intake filter.

Let me know what that is, and I am sure I can help you out further. I am almost positive the compressor is still good. It will get really hot under normal use. It should shut down due to not enough voltage (amps), so something else is happening.

Let me know the model number and then I can look up the recommended amp draw for that compressor.

Re: Vivair compressor amp draw

If it is not blowing fuses, but keeps shutting off, then it seems to be that the thermal overload is kicking on. Is this a new compressor? Ir has it been on the truck a while?

If on the truck for a while, did it build pressure? Maybe the check valve is sticking, causing it not to build pressure and work a lot harder causing it to overheat and kick the thermal overload.

First few things to check:
1) Make sure it is getting 13.8 volts (or close) when running with the engine on.
2) Proper gauge of wire is ran for the distance it is from the battery
3) Proper fuse is being used, which is a 35 amp fuse.

That compressor should pull 26 amps, and maybe have an amp spike of 30 upon start up against high pressure. Check those and let me know.

Re: Vivair compressor amp draw

I will check that. I think the alternator is prob bad. Going to convert it to the internal regulator and see if that helps.

Re: Vivair compressor amp draw

Let me know what you find out. It is important that it gets close to 13.8 volts, as the lower the voltage it gets, the higher the amps it will pull. Plus, it will not run to it's performance potential. Good place to start, and then move onto other items to check.

Re: Vivair compressor amp draw

Changed to an internal regulator alternator and it fixed the problem

Re: Vivair compressor amp draw

now to the next concern,
Does anyone know what the Accuair Speed switch ECU draws to maintain memory?. May be a mute point now that the alternator is charging, but still would like to check.
