Re: 71 chevy Paint Schemes?
First pic below is of the available colors.
- paint schemes were as follows (not all the trucks are necessarily 71's but these schemes were available in 71): pic 2) solid color all over pic 3) color "a" top over color "b" solid body pic 4) color "a" top over upper body color "b" over color "a" below lower side trim (my fave....) and last but not least, the iconic 71-72 2-tone: color "a" top over color "b" above the upper belt and below the lower side trim with color "a" in the middle - alternating 2-tone. Note that color "a" was not always white (but usually was) - for instance, med olive over yellow was one possible color combo as was the 2 shades of olive together. Hope this helps. |

Re: 71 chevy Paint Schemes?
The pic# 4 wasn't available in 71 or 72. That was the deluxe two tone in 69 and 70. The deluxe two tone in 71 and 72 was in between the upper and lower moldings and was not available before 71.

Re: 71 chevy Paint Schemes?
i always thought that as well - but here's a pic from the 1971 sales brochure.
So, I dunno - I haven't seen many (or any?) like that - but SURELY the brochure can't be wrong!!! (I'm being sarcastic, they often are - or plans change before production sometimes). This was, however, a new pic in 71, not a reprint 70 pic with the new grille stuffed in (i have seen that done on a couple of the small sales brochure pics in subsequent year offerings - i.e. 71 grille pasted onto a 70 truck pic - this was done on the 71 camper/rec vehicle brochure a few times as a matter of fact). Having said all that - I'm not inclined to disagree with you - would not be surprised if the only ones like this were indeed just in the brochure. Maybe someone has a live example? |

Re: 71 chevy Paint Schemes?
Weird! I've never seen that brochure, and at first glance it does appear to be a new '71.. but the lack of an engine designation under the marker and what appears to be one under the custom emblem leads me to believe that this is in fact a re-touched '70 pic.

67-72 Solid paint 67-72 Conventional Two-Tone... primary color with a white roof, includes separation trim on cab that is not available without Two-Tone paint. 69-72 Custom Two-Tone... primary color with a white roof and white below the lower body moldings. 71-72 Deluxe Two-Tone... primary color with a white roof and white between the upper/belt and lower body moldings. As noted white was generally the secondary color on Two-Tones but other colors were available in specific combinations. However virtually anything could be ordered but would have been a "Special Paint" truck. Generally these are RPO 1001 or 4001.

Re: 71 chevy Paint Schemes?
Now that I think about it, that two-tone combination was available in 71-72, but only on a suburban, not on a pick up. This would explain why its in your book. But that pic iabove is a re-touched 70.

The Suburban differs in that Deluxe Two-Tone style was not offered on it. Also Suburbans with the upper and lower secondaries were called Special Two-Tone instead of the pickup's Custom Two-Tone. The Custom Two-Tone was offered from 69-72 on pickups. It was not often seen on pickups when Chevrolet introduced and heavily pushed the Deluxe Two-Tone for the 71MY but they were offered concurrently. The Chevrolet truck brochures are light on the Custom Two-Tone paint but it is in the '71 truck brochure and both the '71 and '72 GMC brochures. Without a doubt the clip that Jocko posted from the '71 truck brochure may show an altered '70 or a pre-production face lift '71. The often have features that differ from final production. But generally they are close and often revised.

Re: 71 chevy Paint Schemes?
I'm not one to say something doesn't exist just because I haven't seen it, but in the 25 years I've been around these trucks, I've never seen a '71 or '72 with that two-tone. Just seems odd to me that at least one wouldn't have shown up. The first GMC brocure, is that a '71? Because I've also never seen red interior in a '71 or '72 C10-30.
I'm from Missouri, the show-me-state, so I'm going to need someone to show me an original SPID with this two-tone.

Re: 71 chevy Paint Schemes?
On a side bar: a OE '71 outer front grill had a painted black band aroung the edges. 72 did not, just plane chrome plating. I'll try and find a picture of a 71-72 outer grills.
Ah, in the brochure...

The brochure is indeed a '71 GMC and here is the cover of it. When I posted the pictures I should have notated them. The first with the camper is from the '71 Chevrolet pickup brochure. The bright blue is a '71 GMC brochue and the light blue is a '72

Re: 71 chevy Paint Schemes?
Interesting document! From the difference between this and the data book clip, it would seem that the Two-Tones with other than white secondary were added in early '70.
