1983 Chevy 350 engine idle issue

I have a 1983 Chevy C 10 with the 350 in it. It ran fine up until yesterday, when at the parts store it started to die at idle. Got it home, and today found that the truck will not run at idle. It will start when throttle is increased, however it runs rough, and the exhaust emits gray/black smoke. As soon as throttle is released, the engine immediately dies. I changed the spark plugs, checked the fuel filter, and i am stumped. The carb is still squirting fuel. The number 1 and 3 cylinder spark plugs had some deposits on them, but not much. I need some help here, thanks for your time.

Were the plugs soaked with gas? Sounds like the carburetor is flooding the engine, when was the last time it was cleaned and rebuilt?

Re: 1983 Chevy 350 engine idle issue

Yes, the plugs were soaked in gas. I'm not sure how long ago the carb has been worked on, cleaned, or rebuilt. If that needs to be done, do you recommend shipping it to someone to have it done? It's a Holley, usure of which model exactly. I've just been getting into these trucks for fun, and am still pretty novice at it. Let me know what you would recommend. Thanks for the help.

Easiest/cheapest things first. Check for vacuum leak by using carb cleaner or propane. Carb cleaner with cool engine only please. Youtube video I found
