I see your from alaska what parts store do you have available where your at??
Sounds like to me all you'll need is a can of freon, You can get some that has all you need to recharge your system. some like the one in pic. you hook it on start truck turn on A/C. Pull trigger on can until desired pressure is meant. Which it will tell you on the can what a good PSI is for you. Hope that helps.

Watch out for leaking Schrader valves....you'll see the oily residue at the charging ports, if they're leaking like mine were. The guts are replaceable, but the normal tool, similar to a valve core tool for tires, doesn't fit within the ports. I'm sure it is available at the parts store.

Have a professional shop pull a vacuum on your system and then they can put in the specified amount of R134. |

Re: how to recharge A/C 96 silverado
Dad's 95 did that last year. Put a can of R134 in there and it's been blowing cold ever since.
My 2001 4runner needed a can about every 3 years, but would blow cold for 3 years before I had to add another. The PROPER way to do it is to drive to a shop and have some cerified blahblahblah charge you $1000 to fix it. MY way to do it is to get the can of freon above, add a can, and see how long it blows cold. If it leaks out after a few weeks or quicker, find the leak and fix it. If, as in both of my cases, it blows cold for a year + with a can of freon, just throw a can in there every once and awhile and be done with it. |

i should correct myself, obviously it has a leak, I'm going to hope it doesn't have a *major* leak. I will not pay rediculous shop fees, $120/hr is the cheapest for AC in my area.
