1972 K20 Divorced NP205 Install
So my new Turbo 350 burned up with only 3,000 miles on Christmas Day. I found out that the bolts worked them selves loose from the trans to t-case adaptor. This was due to loose cross-member bolts. So I'm out $750. Sucks. With all that said, I bought a Turbo 400 and a Divorced NP205 for $350. I will be building a custom cross-member for the Turbo 400 and NP205.
Here are the ideas I have found for the cross-members for the Turbo 400... Here are the ideas I have found for the cross-member for the D-NP205... Any ideas or input are welcome.

I wouldn't think it would fall out. Is that a Spicer 24 in that last pic? I had one in my '57 1 ton Napco truck - too cool. Any way good score on the tranny/transfercase combo!

I always love to fab stuff up, but you could just run a 2wd tranny crossmeber. for the tranny. I like the tube t-case mounts, that would be slick!

I wanted to go divorced. I wanted the 400 due to is durability and I wanted the flexibility of the divorced setup. Plus I've had two shop try to stop my married 205 from leaking. Now I know that with each unit separate from each other there is less hassle in them leaking. Thanks for the input.

If you go with a chevy 205 there's always the option down the road to do a Low Max conversion and ditch that anemic 1.96:1 low range if you wanted an even steeper gear. Are you having the th-400 built or keeping it stock? There's a lot to be done to one with basic off the shelf parts that will make it almost bulletproof. |

Did this go anywhere?! I have the same plan except I gave a 700r4. Plan to run a 2wd cross member First trans and see if my timkin 221 mounts can be modified for the divorced 205. I'm also concerned about the added length causing cab floor/shifter conflicts.

I'm doing a similar thing in my k10. Except I'm using a NV3500. my transfer case ended up right under the rear of the cab and my drivelines are the same length. Look through my build thread. I think there is a picture of it.

Checked your build thread and bothing past suspension. Can you post any pics? Howdid you keep trans and transfer case inline ? Stock or fabbed mounts?

My truck is torn apart at the moment, but I can get a picture of my crossmembers. my midshaft is about 10" long. The guy who is doing my drivelines told me the midshaft should be angled a little so the ujoints keep moving.

I would like to see those pictures as well. I am working on rebuild my motor right now. Once thats complete I will start working on the divorced tcase again. I still haven't figured out how I am going to build the crossmember yet. I am planning on using the Northwest fabworks cable shifter.

Heres an older pic of my transfer case mounted up. I built the c rossmember out of 1x2" square tube because thats what I had laying around. Personally I like the picture of the one made out of tube steel.
It sits right in front of the old trailing arm crossmember. I left it there for strength. Heres my tranny crossmember. its got cutouts for the driveline on one side and my 4" exhaust on the other side. |

Then you can use blocks and spacers to get it exactly where you need it. For the front output end I just used blocks off the floor to adjust how low it sat. Then you build your mounts to fit it. So I finally made some progress. I was able to mock up the t-case yesterday and in doing so my buddy suggested a completely different attack to the whole thing. Once in place, we saw that the t case sits slightly above the frame. So the plan is to bend some 1.75 x .25 wall tubing and angle iron. I am very picky, I like strong, functional, and something that look good. What made me happy is that it is a very simple design and the drivelines have a 2" difference. The intermediate shaft is about 9". I will have a mock up hopefully by next week.

and the mid shaft is a must? you can't have a u joint directly between trans and case? or would you have clearance issues with the floor or driveline problems?

My drivelines are about an inch different in length. I don't know for sure. If you've got the cab off while you're setting up your mounts, make sure you allow for the rear support on the bottom of the cab.it sits down lower than the rest of the floor. I had to move my tranfercase forward 1 1/2".
