Thumbs up TOW HOOKS arrived

Not the correct ones but I like them anyway because they are MASSIVE and chrome .

They might be functional up front after I drill holes. My 4x4 frame didn't come with tow hook holes anyway. Or maybe I could use them for the rear.

On second thought these look too nice to put on my truck I might use them as a paper weight, door stopper, hanger, etc. instead. I have a black pair with the same dimentions but less thickness in the hook area that I could use for my truck.

Any idea what these where out of? Has anyone tried using these in our trucks?

Those look like the ones found on 2 ton trucks and buses but since those are chrome they may be off a firetruck.

I took a set like that off of a bus like BLAZERMAN said. Only they are not chrome. Of course they weren't $250.00 either. I only paid $5.00

Hmm. I wonder if those fit the same holes as the truck ones. If so, I may need to look for them. I don't want to drill more holes in my frame though. Stupid p/o ! selling the towhooks!

Smile

It cost me $24.00 to my door with no dirt or grease. They weigh about 7.5 lbs each, so I figured they were a great deal @ $1.60/lb delivered compared to $20/lb for the originals.

where did you come by those, if you don't mind me asking?

also, if you stop by jerry moss' place again, could you see if they would fit the original towhook mounting holes? thanks

I don't think they would fit the same holes. I think these have a wider hole span @ 4.25"-4.5". These look like they originally mount on the bottom rather than the side. I don't have any tow hook holes in my frame so I think if i mount them on the side of the frame with the holes staggered (upper hole towards back and lower hole forward) they might work. They can't be mounted on the front bottom because the leaf spring hangers are in the way.

yeah, original hooks mount with the hook hoops parallel with the framerails, those would mount perpendicular. i just want to get some hooks for wintertime, and i dont really have $250 layin around to buy an original set that my truck SHOULD still have. I also dont wanna drill any holes in the frame. oh well, i guess i have to wait around until i find a $20 set of originals at a swap meet like another boardmember did.

e-mail or PM Jerry. I beleive he said another year hook will mount on the same holes if you have to have hooks for the winter.

I got these on e-bay... single bidder. Jerry said he was watching these, too but I bid on them first so he held back his maximum bid of $300.00 [tongue-in-cheek]

Wow! Those are nice. How come every tow hook seems to involve money? (I see bills in the pics)

I think they are mounted on the front frame horns, just like the light trucks. Here is a pic I took a while back at the local pick a part, you can clearly see one hook sticking out. From the angle its hard to tell how its mounted. Also I am not sure if there is another one. Only bad thing, is this C/40 is the yard's scrap truck, so I probably can't get them
Oh well, I didn't even know they were there, I'm going to stop by there today on my way to work and check it out.

Those are definitely bigger than the ones that I got off of the bus. I think that the smaller ones are more proportionate for my shortbox.

hooks, hooks, hooks

Here is a pic of some different hooks with Center to Center bolt hole measurements.

The '72 hooks are 3 3/16" C to C.

The '73-? hooks are 3 1/2" C to C.

The Bus hooks are 4 1/4" C to C.

The '73 up hooks could be made to fit with slight "wallering" of the holes because they take a smaller bolt.

The skinnier angled tow hooks at the bottom of mkmiller1's picture are actually '81-up. GM used a similar shaped hook (the part the rope/tow strap goes on) with a straight shank (not sure what to call it--the part that mounts to the frame) from '73-'80.

88-98 hooks will work in the stock holes if you remove the safety strap on the driver side spring hanger and swap the hooks from right to left and right to left. i have a set on my K/20 i'm selling. they're a LOT cheaper to.
