over heating
I am having a problem with my truck over heating when I pull my trailer up hill. I have put in an electric fan, my radiator has a trans cooler in it but it is only a 2 row. My thoughts where to get a 4 row radiator, an additional trans cooler, and possibly a bigger water pump. What are your guys thoughts? Has anyone had a simmilar problem? By the way my truck is a 1983 chevy 4x4, 350/350, 33" tires, stock gears and transfer case, running on a 650 carb. My trailer is a 21' toy hauler, about 7000 Lb fully loaded but I never have it fully loaded.

Heat kills transmission, so I would definitely install a separate transmission cooler, and run it through the radiator and then through the cooler. Towing 7k a larger radiator should be considered, also how is the fan clutch is it still pulling plenty of air, do you have a good fan shroud? The stock water pump should be just fine.

Does it actually overheat or does it just run hotter going uphill, then back to normal? You should have a 190* t-stat, plus or minus 5*. Make sure your clutch fan is working well (and the right size) and properly positioned in a good shroud. Get an aux. tranny cooler. If you still run too hot, consider a 4-row. As to plumbing the trans cooler, I have heard that if you go through the radiator cooler first and than through the auxiliary cooler, the fluid can be cooled below optimal operating temperature. It may be better to go through the aux. cooler first. Then if it does get too cool (for instance, when you're not towing uphill), it will pass through the radiator to bring it back up to normal operating temps.

Go with the 4 core your problem will be gone. Buddy had the same issue.

Yea first thing I would do is get a good 4 core radiator. Water pump should be just fine. Also what kinda fan shroud setup do you have?

Depending on your budget, check out Ron Davis Radiators and Stewart Stage 2 water pumps. Pricey but it will probably NEVER overheat no matter what!
