My $10 dollar cup holder

I have the Old Air Products ashtray conversion cupholder in my CST and my C20. I wanted one for my K20 but they are not being made anymore. I bought one of the black slide in cupholders but it blocks my radio and I just don't like it. So I decided to go to my local junkyard and see what was available.

I found the cupholder I needed in a 2003 Nissan Xterra. It is the cupholder for the rear passengers. It mounts in the bottom of the center console. The console was already removed so it was as simple as a couple of screws and releasing some tabs.

I then took a piece of scrap aluminum and made a quick faceplate. I used sandpaper to give it a brushed look. I was also able to use the existing holes in the dash where the little rubber ashtray bumpers were located. I cut out the center hole for the cupholder and Voila....a $10 dollar cup holder!

$2 entry fee for the junkyard (what's up with that?)
$8 for the cupholder assembly
$0 for the scrap aluminum I had sitting under my workbench and the two hex head screws

I like it and it works good!

The best thing is that it required no permanant mods to the ashtray. I can simply remove the faceplate, replace the rubber bumpstops and slide the ashtray back in if I get tired of the thing....

I might make a new nicer faceplate since I cut the center hole a little sloppy on this one....but I might just leave it alone...

What do you think?

Looks real good but doesn’t it block your radio Too? I do like the look of it better than the black slide in one, which is what I have.

My mom always had the best advice. It was just a tad late. After a fall that involved blood, she'd say....."Careful!"

Most of the local yards have gone to $1. I think it has something to do with insurance- you're a paying customer. Still, I consider a couple of hours in the wrecking yard way more entertaining than anything I could find at the dollar movie.

Cool cup holder, by the way.

It does block the radio when I have a cup in the holder....but I think it just looks better than the slide in cupholder....the slide in does a fine job, I just don't like how it looks...seems like there is always a compromise with cup holders for these trucks....the ashtray conversion cupholders will hold a 12 oz soda can really well but are not so good at holding anything larger....the slide in cupholder will hold a 32 oz soda really well....honestly, I still have not found one that does everything well....

Very cool! If you do recut the aluminum trim I would cut it to match the one on your stereo. Just my opinion! Looks great either way! Nice work!
