Trailer to match

A friend mentioned a while back that he had an old pickup bed trailer they used around the farm & was wanting to cleanup a bit and get rid of it. He asked if we thought it would be worth trying to get a few $ by just putting it on Craigslist or something. I asked what year model & he said off a '72 truck so of course I was like "me, me! I'll take it!" He dropped it off this weekend. It is in suprisingly good shape; very little rust & just a few small dings. I've always wanted to build a trailer to match my Blazer. Since the fuel cell is behind the back seat, that leaves virtually no room for coolers or camping stuff. And I just happen to have an extra pair of 36" TSLs that match those on the Blazer for it .....to be continued

Re: Trailer to match

I've wanted to do that for quite a while, just never actively looked for a bed. Neat idea...

You have a fuel cell in the cabin of the truck behind the back seat?

Re: Trailer to match

It's a neat idea, but that's a short bed... Worth a lot of $...

Also good to have if you need a bedside for your Blazer.

Re: Trailer to match

This is so cool. I have been trying to talk my wife into one for awhile. I always wanted a soft top Blazer with a soft top on the truck bed. How is the axle done?

Nice score. I've always wanted to do the same, but I've got no place to store one. Might get a bit bouncy on the big meats.

I always thought it would be cool to have a trailer like this to be able to bolt the hard top to, while on the road...that way you have it with you if you need/want to put it back on.

Cool project!

That's a great idea, but you'd have to put it on backwards or find a way to cover the front. It would be an incredible air drag otherwise...

Re: Trailer to match

Nice looking bed. Usually those beds converted to trailers are beat all to heck, especially one that was on a farm. I wish we had rust free beds up here in the "rust belt".

Lol yea....can't imagine it'd last long without some sort of fairing. That would be the easy part...fabricating some sort of front mount/wind deflector.

It's just got the stock coils & trailing arms under it now. The worn out shocks are part of what is making it so bouncy right now, I think.

Blazer has no trim. The trim on this trailer is dinged up pretty good in sections, so I took all that off last night. We'll weld up the holes before body work & paint on it.

Bounce should not be a big deal as long as the tongue is straight so it does not crab. I found this old picture from the early 90's of what was left of my 69'. I pulled it behind my 79' yota. The yota had 33" tires on it but it looked like a real toy with the ole' chevy behind it sporting the 18.5/44 monster mudders. made a great dump trailer though, I could fill it to the top with dirt, unhook the hitch and it would stand straight up on its gate. Had a chain to pull it back down to the yota bumper.

Re: Trailer to match

Finally have a little progress to show on the trailer...
Had some POR15 left from another project, so sprayed the whole bottom side. Also replaced the shocks & track arm bushings. Welded in a few small tiedowns. Got initial round finished of sanding & priming. Decided not to fool with welding up all the trim holes. As that would be a major PITA & if I ever decide to sell it, somebody might want to add the trim.
For now, it's rolling on the 33" tires & rims I had previously on the Blazer, which helps its overall look alot. I still want to eventually do the 8 lug w/37s to match the truck. But for now, I'm trying not not spend much $ on it & using what we've got. These 33s picked its height up quiet a bit from the OE bias tires that came on it.
Biggest mod so far is the coupler. No way am I forking out $200 on the fancy "offroad" couplers folks sell. However, I still wanted something with more twist & that can't pop off a ball. My fabbing genius husband came up with the lift arm end & draw pin idea one day we were looking around at the local Tractor Supply.

Re: Trailer to match

This is great.. I JUST bought a '72 longbed to do this very thing. Plus I'm going to take the Chevy frot clip instead of my gmc... Then part out the rest. Looks great!
