Lt-1 Engine Installers-header Questions!
It's almost time to put my motor in my 67 2wd Truck and I had some questions about what other LT-1 installers have done about headers. The LT-1 motors have D-shaped ports inlike those of early non-fuel injected motors. I have yet to see any manufacturer make them for D-shaped heads, except for one company who make block-hugger headers. I am not certain that these would fit on a 67-72 2wd Truck or not. A man who works for Hooker recomended that I use the factory style 67-87 headers with at least 1 3/4" pimary tubes to compensate for the type of ports that the LT-1 motor uses. I also don't know if this would be okay or not.
So if you have installed a 93-97 Lt-1 motor in your Truck, please let me know what you did about exhaust manifolds or headers. Any help or suggestion would be appreciated alot!! |

I was thinking of doing this swap and planned on using regular small block headers.
Another option is to use the factory LT1 manifolds. |

The factory manifolds are not an option. The engine bay is all chrome or body colored. The factory manifolds might work on a daily driver, but no my truck.
A 1 3/4" primary tube header willl only work. |

Is there any massaging of the firewall or transmission tunnel needed to swap in a LT1/4L60E setup? I know the tranny mount needs attenten but is anything else needed to install this setup?

I thought LT1 and LS1 had spaced exhaust ports and the old style headers would not fit?

I know someone who was using long tube mid 70's camaro headers on the LT-1 in a 96 Impala SS ... They were spaced correctly and they were larger then the D port ...

Street and Perfomance makes shorty headers. The spacing on the LT1 is the same as other small blocks. I called Headman and they said they had some that fit...not sure if the ports are correct though. The stock manifolds flow pretty good...I stayed with them. If you are going to use the manifolds, be sure and get the exhaust flanges from the doner car. They are unavailable anywhere else, unless you buy the whole $600 Y-pipe for a camaro. I made mine out of plate steel.

I`m also thinking about do this swap. Can the stock tank be modified for the efi or do I need a custom tank? If I can use the stock tank, who can I send it to to set it up for efi?

GAS TANK-I would never leave a gas tank inside the cab. I purchase a metal Blazer gas tank kit. Then cut the filler off the side and moved it to the top of the tank. Then I purchased a EFI fuel pump ring and attached it to the top of the tank. Or you can spend upwards off $500-$700 to have a aluminum tank with the pump assembly already installed!

I modified the stock tank for efi. I put an external pump on and ran a few lines.

I had an aluminum tank built around a stock camaro pump from a junkyard. I got the whole tank from the junkyard, cut out the portion where the pump/sending unit was, and took that along with a drawing to a local boat builder...$225
