Re: rear end swaps

Officially called the ALD (automatic locking differential) according to GM.

It's come to be known as the "gov bomb" among the general population though

there is a 10 bolt 5 lug from a 86 at my local pick and pull but its got 3.08 gears i dont think it will be worth it.

thanks
2:73 to 308 is a pretty good jump. Did that on my truck and was happy with the change. Usually suburbans and such have better gearing in them

Re: rear end swaps

My 10-Bolt swap from a 1985 1/2 ton into a 1975 SWB Fleet C/10 :
10 Bolt 8.5 Truck rear axle.
2:56.1 8.5 ring & pinion.
2-series Eaton Posi.
Moser Axles : Brand New.
New drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, spring kits, bearings, seals, crush sleeve, 1350 U-Joint Heavy Duty Pinion Flange.

Some of the small bolts were metric, others not; just fyi.
Do note that we had to change the parking brake cables from the prior 12-Bolt into the 10-Bolt backing plates.
The 1985 parking brake cables were longer than the stock ones from the 12-Bolt that were correct length for a SWB.

Sure, all your big ford cars as well as linclon and mercury from the 70s & 80s are 5X5 bolt pattern. (some mid 70s F100 &F150 pickups are 5X5 also) and the
center hole is the same as GM. I use factory 15X8 GM truck rally wheels
on my ford (Linclon) 9 inch.
This one was in my 73 C10 SWB for over 10 years and 60,000 miles
3.70 gear, 28 spline with a trac-loc diff.

Re: rear end swaps

I would assume that an 85 C10 would be the same width as a 73 but I don't know for sure. As for the posi/locker, i just check pick-a-part in the truck section. In the case of a 9 inch, I usually look at Bronco and F150 4x4s. Often they have an ID tag that shows the gear ratio. If both tires spin together in the same direction that usually indacates a posi or locker. You have to pull it to be sure and to check if you have a 28 or 31 spline.
