Fan Options 84 5.3

Hey guys, just interested to see what some people have done for fan options in their machines. 1984 K5 with a 2007 5.3, I would like to go mechanical, but appearently there was no Mech Fan made for the 5.3. Would the mech fan and clutch from the 6.0 work? Anyways Using the stock rad, what have others done, I'm curious! thank you for your replies!

Re: Fan Options 84 5.3

weird angle to show it but this is a be-cool radiator with either a be-cool or a flexalite fan (can't remember

if your waterpump snout is long enough to accept the fan clutch and fan, I don't see why it wouldn't work. You may want to build a shroud with a mechanical though.

Not sure if you could swap the pump and/or pully, but the older 5.3 had a mech fan screwed onto the water pump pully. (My 01 did) I threw mine away and installed a two speed electric Tbird fan.

ALL 99-04 truck 5.3's had a clutch fan....Newer trucks still have the threaded hub for the fan clutch.
I use a clutch fan whenever possible. And I think the shroud fills the space between the radiator & engine nicely.

Interesting. It looks from that angle as though the fan would be too far forward towards the radiator to make the shroud as effective as it should be. ie the fan should be about half in, half out as you look straight across the rear opening...

The fans not half way out, But is out a little, Cools great & have no A/C head pressure problems.

99-04 trucks have the fan tucked in the shroud from the factory.

Re: Fan Options 84 5.3

Since I have a Dmax LLY over-heater, I've been down the road of all the things that can effect the stack, and I remember several 'heated' debates over on The Diesel Place regarding fan placement. Too far in or out has a impact on efficiency. I'm more worried about the A/C performance here in Phx., probably like you are too!!

What is the hose from? Also a later model square?

Upper & Lower radiator hoses are from the 04 Chevy the engine & trans is from.

I was under the assumption the 04/05 LLY had to small of a radiator.

For the most part, you are correct, but there were many changes that GM did to the LBZ to help relieve the issue.

Not to change topics and thread jack too much but i have an 05 lly and mine runs great and doesnt overheat like ive heard of some of them, have you changed out your Turbo mouthpiece to the newer LBZ one, that helps out with lots of problems, i even picked up an easy 1 MPG just from that mod, and it really runs with a the turbo back exhaust.
just something to think about if your still having problems, and i am down here in the valley too, and tow with it and what not,
