what is the proper way to debadge/demold?
I tried to de-mold my brothers truck and ended up with 2 lines of glue underneath that i cant get to come off. I didn't use a heat gun of any kind...I used carb cleaner and brute force
should i have used heat? how do you guys debadge/demold?

Re: what is the proper way to debadge/demold?
I use a heat gun, high strength fishing line and Wurth W-SOL residue removal.
1: heat the molding till it is hot to the touch 2: use the fishing line to slice through the glue 3: clean with W-SOL I have done this many times with great success. I am sure there are other products out there that accomplish the same result. 3M also makes a body eraser that goes on the end end of a die grinder. It works really well but I have seen guys burn through the paint with it.

Re: what is the proper way to debadge/demold?
how easy does it come off with W-SOL? howmuch was actually left after using the fishing line, i have literally an 1/8th inch of solid squishy adhesive. all the way down the side of his truck.

Re: what is the proper way to debadge/demold?
Most of the solid squishy adhesive I wasnable to remove with my fingers by rolling it up in a ball, there was still some residue after I got that stuff off and I used WD-40 and lots of it and a microfiber rag to remove the residue. I am not sure if it is a good idea or not to use WD40 for this, I have heard both sides, but it did work for me. I washed the truck right after and used a paint cleaner and wax.

Man this is never an easy job that's why I avoid it! I just removed rain vents and it took an hour/side. I used three or four different solvents...it's just a PITA.

When I did it, I repainted the whole truck so I just tore it off.

Re: what is the proper way to debadge/demold?
An eraser wheel like this one
![]() is the quickest and easiest way I've found to remove the tape residue left behind after taking off moldings & emblems. Works great for removing vinyl pinstriping tape too. They zip that molding tape right off without any hand rubbing or chemicals and won't damage the factory paint. Shouldn't damage a repaint that was done with base/clear or urethane either, but you might end up with an area of factory paint showing if the molding was just taped off during the repaint. I've never tried using one on a rattle can paint job but I have a feeling it would damage that type of paint. |

Go to a body shop supplier and get 3M adhesive remover MAKE SURE YOU USE 3M, put it on a rag go over it a few times soaking it good it will come right off. Best stuff I ever used.

Thats the stuff. Let it soak on there for a couple minutes. A friend of mine uses it at his body shop all the time that's how I found out about it.

Re: what is the proper way to debadge/demold?
yes. Like I said let it sit on there for a little to soak in but it works the best of anything I've used. We use it when we get trucks in that had decals on them to remove the adhesive that it left.

Re: what is the proper way to debadge/demold?
wish the decals that were on mine just left adhesive... they tore off little pieces of clear coat.
