Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
King pins aren't that hard, I cut a relief just above the inner c to relieve some tension and crank them out with a 7/8 allen socket and breaker bar/cheater bar. Hardest part was torquing the new ones to spec, I broke a socket adapter to tighten it to the factory spec of 500-600ftlbs. I had both sides done in about 3 hours to include disassembly and reassembly of all front end components.
It definitely helps leaving the axle in, as I grabbed onto the bumper/fender with the cheater on my belt buckle to torque the new ones down.

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
I would say putting fuel in a truck or changing the wheel is 'easy' and changing a kingpin more to moderate or hard depending on how bad it is stuck or what tools you have at your disposal and.... how you do it lol as far as the dodge front axles go i love dodges for the diesel i haven't had a problem with my early 04 but my cousin has a wobble on his 04.5, hopefully i never have it on that as i already have it on my suburban

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
I don't know why everyone thinks it's hard to change the kingpin. I did at least two, both where 78/79 axles that where never changed. I never did it before for the fear it wouldn't budge, or would break or strip something, and that I couldn't change it out. I was dumbfounded when it they came out with little effort. Have a harder time getting the lower bearing plate off....

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
While I agree, there are those that think it is a must to put some on, then they turn around wonder why their studs snapped off when they torque them to the factory values

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
I lube my lugs, And I have never had one come loose. Or break off from tightening.

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
To do them properly, you should only torque them to 80% of the recommended value, since the torque spec is a dry value.

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
Well I replaced the bushings and springs and I couldn't get it to do it but it did feel like it tried and that was only at 35 mph. I'm going to the alignment shop today to have that checked. Don't know what to do after that.

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
Did you run over any good size bumps thats a place it likes to come out at so rail road tracks work as a good test

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
It doesn't seem to matter what speed I'm going or how big the bumps are, it's just if i'm on the brakes. I tightened up the steering box a little, it was a bit sloppy so I think if I get a new one of those and some tie rod ends it should solve the issue. I also found that the alignment is toed out a little bit so once all that is replaced I'll get it aligned and cross my fingers that I can drive it. Lol

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
If it does with the only the brakes it sounds like the rotors are warped....

Re: 79 1 ton with the death wobble
The dreaded death wobble.
My 85 k30 never had the DW, then After I changed everything to new parts with a lift I all of the sudden the had DW. Only thing I didn't do was king pins. And in the past, I just welded a old nut to the upper king pin if the Allen won't break it out Posted via Mobile Device |
