Transmission question.

First time poster.

I have a 65 Chevy C-10 I inherited. It has a 283 V-8 original motor. The transmission is a 3 speed manual. I think it is aftermarket, the original transmission shifter is on the column the one installed now is on the floor. I am wanting to put a automatic transmission, just a 3 or 4 speed. I did some searching but am not sure which one to get. I was just wondering what ya'll opinion is.

Re: Transmission question.

if you are going to go to the trouble (and it's not a lot of trouble) of putting in an automatic, recommed a 700R4 for the added benefit of highway cruising at lower rpm. If you want to stick with a, well, stick, I'd recommend a T5 - for that same benefit (overdrive). Here's my T5 install thread for reference, but 700R4 is a great way to go also. You can google 700R4 install or something like that in the search box at the top of any of these pages (make sure to click the radio button "67-72trucks.com") and find articles outlining how others have done it.

And welcome to the forum! Happy first post. Looking fwd to some pics of your truck.

Re: Transmission question.

Welcome!I'd definitely recommend something with an overdrive aswell, I run a TH350 and you have two options, stick with factory gears and the engine with be screaming for mercy on the highway at 3000 rpm, or put lower gears in the back and deal with the sluggishness. With an overdrive tranny like a th200-4r or a 700r4 you get great gearing and a nice overdrive gear to drop your rpm's on the freeway.

Re: Transmission question.

Welcome to the forum. Also, the floor shifter doesn't indicate the transmission has been changed, it only indicates someone probably got tired of the troublesome column shift and installed an aftermarket floor shifter.
