Hi all,
so im in the process of getting a 49 chevy cab wit front clip. Everything is in great shape. i got a really good deal on it but i dont like the 5 window setup. so my question is that if they accidentally get broke out or something could i put sheet metal over the holes and make it back to the standard 3 window setup? the glass is good right now but if the seals or anything is bad i dont want to pay big $$$ for something i dont even like that well

this may have been one of the first times I have ever heard someone want to GET RID of the 5-window corners...
Do you plan on keeping the truck forever? If you think you will sell the truck I wouldnt cover up the windows. period. I am only familiar with 55-59 replacement parts but there are 2 skins of sheetmetal you will have to re-work. and in the end result you will only remove value from your truck. If you REALLY dont want a 5-window cab i would say move on to the next truck and let someone who wants it buy it. In my area there are 4-5 3-window trucks for every 5-window for sale, and the 5 window is always trying to fetch more money - rightfully so.

All that said, if this is what you want to do, hell its your truck and go for it... but if you dont already own it I would just find a 3-window truck and save yourself ALOT of work trying to get it smooth and looking original.

Edit... There are alot of people converting there 3-window trucks to 5-window's by buying the inner-outter skins and cutting the areas out of there cabs, ask around someone may have the cut-outs that they removed from there 3-window that would be the best way in my opinion of getting the sheet metal to fill the two holes...

Why not just offer to swap cabs with someone who has a 3 window?

P.S. Most of us don't get NOT wanting a 5 window, but to each their own!

I am with you on this one Midget. I am also personally not a huge fan of the 5 window, but that does not mean that I still don't enjoy them.

but with that same note I would have to agree with Maximus don't go converting the 5 window to a 3 window. your best bet if you do not like it would be to resell it or trade it for a 3 window with some extra cash.

there are tonnes of people out there looking for the 5 window, and even if you build the truck and drive it you might realize that you like being able to see out the corner of the truck and it's not this big blind spot.

The seals aren't really expensive, yes, the glass can be but you can find used pieces. I have 3 sets in the garage.

I didn't want a 5 window either but that's what I ended up with. You'll enjoy driving the 5 window, no more blind spot over your shoulder, I've fallen in love with corner windows.

I believe our member from Rome converted his truck from five to three windows when he got it. Yep, here is his build thread on the HAMB http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/s...d.php?t=568254

He gives detailed photos on how he did it. The same photos may be in his build thread here but the one on the HAMB was easier for me to find.

My preference runs to the three window cabs but if I was building a stock height cab truck to sell I'd build a five window.

I prefer the 3 window my self, but i ended up getting a 5 window. It is growing on me and I like the added glass every day.

I learned to drive in a 54 five window when I was 12 and then often drove my stepfather at the time home from the tavern.

Love this and if possible i would because my gf would love to drive a truck like that around she just dont like the idea of putting that much money into one

Ill keep the 5 windows when i get and see how i like it. they just seem to be funny looking to me.

5 Windows are worth more. You would be better off selling the 5 cab and buying a 3 cab. I have a caab with 3 and would swap for a 5 anytime. My 3 needs some work though.

I'd have to agree that with two equal trucks that are either restored or mildly modified the 5 window cab truck should bring a higher price and that is why I mentioned above that if I were building a mildly modified truck to sell I would probably use a five window cab for just that reason. That said most of my favorite AD trucks are three window trucks and for my own trucks I prefer the three window cabs.

I dont plan on ever selling this truck. and for the moment i think ill keep the 5 window cab, worst case scenario is that if the glass gets broke sometime down the road, i can always patch the holes and make it a 3 window and on the inside run some curved pillars to hold speakers/subs to cover the inside hole

im with u midget i dont care for the 5 windows either, hell every one around here says the 5 window cab is a special super duper thing that just offers 100 of thousand of dollars to your ride, bull crap, i would swap somebody myself for a 3 window cab, it would b so much easyier

I have one of each and there is a reason for the five window......
If you are going to drive your truck in traffic you will know why they made the 5 window!
I drive both trucks all week depends where i am going and I like the 5 window best because it is easier to look over my shoulder and see traffic.
The new truck is a five window that we took two cabs a 5 and a 3 and put them together and added 10 inches behind the door in front of the corner glass, so here you go.
By the way that truck is going up for sale soon.

Here's an awesome build thread over at the H.A.M.B. where someone did just that - filled in the 5-window corners to make it a 3-window. It is also just a really cool build to read through.

Add me as another one who really would have preferred a 3 window. I've always thought the corner windows looked goofy and like an afterthought the way they are so much taller than the rear window.

At some point I'd like to get me a 3 window truck and enlarge the rear window to try and get the look I want without having huge blindspots.
